The ingenuity of this wraparound back support is a removable pad that provides compression right on your sacroiliac joint, the connection between your tailbone (sacrum) and pelvic bone (ilium), so the hips and sacrum become more stable, releasing muscle tension and reducing pain-causing strain to the lower back. Adjustable tension straps let you customize the compression on your S.I. joint. Thanks to strategically placed non-slip silicone gel strips, the contoured, low profile belt stays in place and you can comfortably wear under clothing… all day!

Wimbledon 2014: Marion Bartoli is still enjoying her fairytale ending

Marion Bartoli, above, will be in the royal box when Sabine Lisicki opens the women's tournament on Wimbledon's Centre Court on Tuesday. Photograph: Scott Heavey/AELTC/EPA

Marion Bartoli exposes her right shoulder to show some light blue tape holding it together and asks: 'Do you believe in miracles?'

That is how the reigning but retired Wimbledon champion - the first since Steffi Graf in 1997 not to defend her title - regards her victory over Sabine Lisicki in the most tearful final last year, when she concluded an extraordinary one-armed run through the draw without dropping a set, then decided with much regret and only cursory reflection that her career was over, at 28.

As for the future, she is full of hope for the new generation and concurs with the British No1 Heather Watson, who says: 'Now anybody can beat anybody.' Asked to name prospects, Bartoli said: 'There are many: obviously Eugenie Bouchard from Canada, Madison Keys; Garbine Muguruza. There are different players that can achieve great results on different surfaces.

'I think the new trends is these youngsters are not afraid to beat the big players, the established players. When you see Serena Williams going out 6-2, 6-2 to Muguruza in a grand slam [at the French Open], that's really not something we're used to seeing, maybe five or 10 years ago. A top player might go out in tough matches, very tough matches - but not like that.

'They're really coming out fearless. They just play and they believe every time they're on the court they're going to beat whoever is on the other side of the net. They say: 'Well, we're good enough and we're going to show the world'.' Just as she did last year.

As for that remarkable Wimbledon performance, from tentative start to emotional finish, Bartoli said: 'You have to understand that every morning I couldn't lift my arm. If I didn't have the help of my physio warming up my shoulder, I couldn't literally lift my arm.

'It was the same with my back and the same with my achilles. I really put all the energy and desire that I had inside my body into this championship. I felt it was my total last effort, and somehow I was able to do it.'Bartoli, guided in her farewell run by her French compatriot Amélie Mauresmo, Andy Murray's new coach, could not stop smiling on Sunday when asked to recall her triumph over adversity, odds and a field decimated by upsets.

She admits to watching her finishing ace 'every couple of days' on YouTube, and has a photo of the trophy on her phone.

The 29-year-old has confirmed she will be in the royal box when Lisicki opens the women's tournament on Centre Court on Tuesday. As for the notorious John Inverdale 'not a looker' episode last year, Bartoli and the BBC commentator have well and truly buried it.

'I have a very short-term memory,' she says with a laugh. 'This is my problem. We actually have a very good friendship. We just talked briefly about 'the situation'. He said he made a comment that he was not supposed to do, that he didn't meant it, whatever.

'You know what? Last year for me it was all about winning Wimbledon and making my dream a reality. That was all I was caring about. Just me having this pure joy inside me. I didn't really reflect at all on the comments he made.'

Bartoli added: 'It didn't affect me at all. I was just happy to have this trophy in my hand. I'm just extremely honoured to be still the 2013 Wimbledon champion and reigning champion. It was a fairytale that actually happened to my life last year. I finally got my title. I finished without dropping a set on an ace.

'It was just purely and simply like this. You could have told me David Beckham was waiting for me outside the room. I would say: 'I don't care because I just have the trophy.''

And she does. As for who might win it in her absence, Williams remains the clear favourite. She may have to beat Maria Sharapova, the French Open champion, in the quarter-finals - the Russian meets the British wildcard Samantha Murray in the first round - and there could be some serious resistance from Simona Halep before the final.

From the other side of the draw, Li Na, the No2 seed, looks best placed to challenge the American - if Serena gets there. The best player in the world sounded awfully world-weary the other day.

If all is not well, the upstarts identified by Bartoli will be more than keen for a rebellion.

Li Na Ousted at Wimbledon; Novak Djokovic Advances

WIMBLEDON, England - Second-seeded Li Na, the reigning Australian Open champion, was eliminated, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), by Barbora Zahlavova Strycova on Friday in the first major upset at Wimbledon.

Li, who had advanced to the quarterfinals three times before at Wimbledon, looked out of sorts for most of the third-round match on Court 1. She blew a set point in the second set.

In men's play, top-seeded Novak Djokovic overcame a hard fall in the third set to advance to the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 Centre Court win over Gilles Simon.

Leading, 3-2, in the third set and with Simon serving, Djokovic lunged for a forehand shot and fell hard to the grass, rolling over and grabbing his upper left arm and grimacing in pain.

But after receiving medical treatment, he recovered to play out the match, breaking Simon's serve in the final game, his seventh break in the match.

'It was a sharp pain,' Djokovic said. 'It was an awkward fall. I was just hoping there is nothing really bad with the joint. Luckily there is nothing damaged. I could play. Just the muscle was quite sore because of the impact. All in all, I'm just glad to get through.'

In other men's play, No. 19 Feliciano López of Spain beat Ante Pavic of Croatia, 6-4, 7-6 (4), 7-5, in a second-round match, and Kevin Anderson beat Fabio Fognini of Italy, 4-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the fourth round.

Anderson, who won 10 of the last 11 games, is the first South African to advance to the fourth round at Wimbledon since Wayne Ferreira in 2000. He has reached the fourth round in his last three Grand Slams.

In a second-round match carried over from Thursday because of rain, Santiago Giraldo of Colombia beat No. 30 Marcel Granollers of Spain, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Earlier, the French Open finalist Simona Halep and the former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki won their matches after rain delayed the start of play for about 30 minutes.

Halep, who lost the Roland Garros final to Maria Sharapova, advanced with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine in a second-round match. Wozniacki moved into the fourth round after a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ana Konjuh of Croatia.

No. 22-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia beat Caroline Garcia of France, 7-5, 6-3, and Belinda Bencic of Switzerland defeated Victoria Duval of the United States, 6-4, 7-5.

Later Friday, the defending champion, Andy Murray, took a 15-match winning streak at the All England Club into the third round against 27th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.

Murray won six matches in a row at the place to earn a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, then seven in a row during Wimbledon last year on the way to the title, then another two this week.

Nick Kyrgios Topples No. 1 Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England - Until the evening shadows fell on Centre Court Tuesday, the last time a teenager beat a No. 1 player at a Grand Slam event was at the 2005 French Open. The winner was Rafael Nadal, over Roger Federer, a couple of days after Nadal's 19th birthday.

Nick Kyrgios, a 19-year-old wild-card entrant from Australia, joined Nadal by beating him in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

All limbs and panache, Kyrgios battered Nadal with big serves, boundless reach and boyish enthusiasm. Ranked No. 144 in the world, but rising fast, Kyrgios looked immune to the pressure and fearless with his shots, building strength and confidence on the way to a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory.

He served quickly to unsettle Nadal and his notoriously slow pace of play, unleashing 130-mile-per-hour serves. He struck right-handed forehands with the loose motion of a man cracking a whip. He nonchalantly sent one Nadal shot back between his legs, raising his arms when it won the point.

Kyrgios won the final point with his 37th ace. He turned to friends and family, did a bit of a dance, and quickly wore an expression that said he was not surprised.

'You've got to believe you can win the match from the start, and I definitely believe that,' he said in a television interview moments after the match.

He had little time to celebrate, with the men's quarterfinals scheduled for Wednesday. Kyrgios will face No. 8 Milos Raonic of Canada, another hard-serving player.

Roger Federer, seeded fourth and searching for his eighth Wimbledon singles title, will face his fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka, seeded fifth. Federer had not dropped a set in his four matches, including Tuesday's victory over the Spaniard Tommy Robredo.

No. 2 Novak Djokovic will play No. 26 Marin Cilic, and Andy Murray, the third-seeded defending champion, will play No. 11 Grigor Dimitrov.

Kyrgios was a wild-card entrant who built momentum, and a rousing following among Australian fans at Wimbledon, by withstanding nine match points in a five-set victory over No. 13 Richard Gasquet in the second round.

He beat another wild card, Jiri Vesely, in the third round to reach Nadal.

Nadal won Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010, but seems to have a sudden allergy to grass. He lost in the second round in 2012 and was ousted in the first round last year. He lost the first set in each of his first three matches this year before sweeping the unsung upstart from the tournament with building strength.

It looked to be developing the same way against Kyrgios. The men held serve, back and forth, before Kyrgios captured the first set in a 7-5 tiebreaker. Nadal first broke Kyrgios's serve to win the last game of the second set, and the match felt oh-so-slightly tilted in favor of the world's best player.

But Nadal could not shake free, and he could not solve Kyrgios's serve. The third set went to another tiebreaker. Kyrgios prevailed. Each player had won 117 points, but Kyrgios had captured two of the sets.

Nadal could not respond. Kyrgios broke Nadal for the first time early in the fourth set, and held serve on his own, winning all four points in the final game.

He is the lowest-ranked player to beat Nadal since No. 690 Joachim Johansson beat him in Stockholm in 2006.

The result upset the balance atop men's tennis, where Murray, Djokovic, Nadal and Federer represent the champions of 35 of the past 37 Grand Slam titles. The four men, the Wimbledon's top four seeds, have taken turns wining the past four Wimbledon championships. At least two of them, and often three, have been in the semifinals here every year since 2006.

Wawrinka was one of the two men to have broken through, winning the Australian Open earlier this year. Like Federer, Wawrinka on Tuesday knocked out a Spaniard, No. 19 Feliciano López, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7), 6-3. Unlike Federer, Wawrinka has not ventured this far before at Wimbledon. It took him 10 appearances, two short of the tournament record in the Open era, to reach the quarterfinals.

'When you play Roger at Wimbledon, when he's fit and confident and feeling well, it's one of the biggest challenges in tennis,' Wawrinka said. 'It's like playing Rafa in the French Open.'

Nadal won the ninth French Open of his career last month. He beat Murray in the semifinals and Djokovic in the final, all part of a familiar script.

He left without the chance to meet his friendly rivals at Wimbledon. But it seems likely that he and the rest of the tennis world will see plenty more of Kyrgios.

Novak Djokovic marries Jelena Ristic days after winning at Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic says he 'couldn't ask for more' after tying the knot with his pregnant childhood sweetheart just days after winning the men's title at Wimbledon.

The 27-year-old Serbian-born Tennis player exchanged vows with Jelena Ristic in the grounds of Montenegro's Aman Sveti Stefan resort.

The bride - who is expecting their first child - wore a gown by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, the designer of the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress.

Djokovic told Hello! magazine: 'I was trying to be present in that moment and memorise it. I was focused on her, and her smile and our baby. It really was a perfect moment.'

Ristic said: 'I was very nervous and everything seemed a blur. I was seeing him through tears and immediately started crying when I saw him.'

The pair married on Thursday, just four days after Djokovic beat Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final and dedicated his five-set victory - his second Wimbledon win - to his fiancée and 'our future baby'.

AFC Wimbledon vs. Chelsea: How the Blues Will Line Up

Use your ← → (arrow) keys to browse more stories

Chelsea's second pre-season game will see them make the short trip across south west London to AFC Wimbledon's Cherry Red Records Stadium. Having recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over the Wycombe Wanderers on Wednesday, 21 of the 22 players involved will fancy their chances at a place in the starting XI.

Mark Schwarzer will likely start in goal while Petr Cech continues his recovery from a shoulder injury. Mitchell Beeney made his debut against Wycombe and could get an outing at Wimbledon, although Jose Mourinho may prefer to use the more experienced Jamal Blackman ahead of him.

Youngster Todd Kane went off injured after just 17 minutes against Wycombe and will not feature in this game, leaving Branislav Ivanovic to replace him at right-back. Kurt Zouma is also able to play at right-back but should start in his preferred centre-half position alongside John Terry.

Nathan Ake started at left-back on Wednesday and hooked in the cross for the opening goal. However, his defensive lapses caused problems for his teammates and he could find that 16-year-old Jay Dasilva makes it into the starting XI ahead of him.

Ben Hoskins/Getty Images

Nemanja Matic could find himself playing as a purely defensive midfielder, with Jeremie Boga starting in front of him after setting up both Ivanovic's and Terry's goals at Wycombe. The 17-year-old was among the most talked-about players after the game and is certainly competing for a place on the European tour.

Marco van Ginkel should replace Boga at half-time as he continues his return following knee surgery, while Lewis Baker should start as a box-to-box midfielder as he continues his campaign to break into the first-team squad.

Lucas Piazon spoke to the official Chelsea website about the uncertainty surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge, saying:

It's always nice to be here and to see everybody again and to see the friends that I've spent a lot of time with. I don't know what is going to happen but at the moment I'm really happy to be here. I will play in pre-season until we make a decision and I will try to do what's the best thing for me.

Despite impressing during the first half of his loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem last season, Piazon knows that he will need to make a huge impression on Mourinho to feature in the first-team plans for next season. Chelsea are overloaded with players for Piazon's attacking midfield position, and he will certainly need to put in a better performance than he did against Wycombe if he is to avoid another loan spell.

John Swift is likely to start on the left of the attack, while Mourinho will have to make a tough decision over who starts up front. Demba Ba was the only available first-team striker, and with him having completed a move to on Friday, per the official website, the Special One will have to rely on his youngsters to replicate Wednesday's result.

Both Patrick Bamford and Isaiah Brown had stand-out performances at Wycombe, scoring three of the five goals between them. Bamford prefers to play as a typical poacher, which allows Mourinho more scope to assess the attacking midfielders supporting him. He is more likely to start the first half, with Brown again replacing him at half-time.

It is likely that Mourinho will again use all of his substitutes as he continues his assessment of the squad ahead of next week's European tour. Whether any of the fringe players can make enough of an impact to stay in the squad remains to be seen, but another excellent result will do them no harm at all.

AFC Wimbledon vs. Chelsea: Date, Time, TV Info and Preview

Chelsea continue the start of their preseason programme as they face off against fellow Londoners AFC Wimbledon.

Jose Mourinho will be hoping to give a run out to many of his reserves as he lets them battle it out for a first-team opportunity.

Here is how you can watch the game:

When: Saturday, July 19, at 3 p.m. BST (10 a.m. ET)

Where: Cherry Red Records Stadium, Kingston Upon Thames, England

Jose Mourinho to Prove Why He Is the Special One

To Chelsea fans, Jose Mourinho has nothing to prove, but last year was somewhat of a disappointment for the Blues as they finished the season struggling.

Their championship challenge fell away sharply in the final weeks, and their Champions League campaign ended abruptly so close to the final.

Mourinho spent a lot of last season bemoaning the fact that he needed to strengthen his squad, and the owner has answered the call with the capture of Spain's hitman, Diego Costa.

The 25-year-old was the star of La Liga last season as his team Atletico Madrid won the title in style.

The player hit 35 goals in 46 La Liga and European matches, per WhoScored.com, and he is sure to add the firepower that Mourinho has been crying out for.

But the record of one of Mourinho's forwards was not so bad-Demba Ba, who has now left Stamford Bridge.

Football writer Michael Cox highlighted this when he tweeted:

Mourinho's whining about strikers convinced everyone Demba Ba was rubbish, but 43 goals in 77 starts & 22 sub apps (PL) is pretty good

- Michael Cox (@Zonal_Marking) July 18, 2014

With Ba now departed, the future of Fernando Torres also looks bleak as he looks to play second fiddle to his international teammate Costa. A long spell on the bench will almost definitely be Torres' immediate future.

Now in his second season in charge of his second spell, Mourinho will be better prepared to bring Chelsea back the glory they crave, and with an improved squad, they are the danger team in England, at present.

If they can gel early on and get a solid preseason under their belts, they could run away with the Premier League in 2014-15.

Chelsea to Play the Kids Against AFC Wimbledon

Ben Hoskins/Getty Images

The game against Wimbledon is purely one about fitness and sharpness, but Chelsea will also use it to blood their impressive youth team.

Charlie Skillen of the Mail Online recently wrote about the club's youth products who starred in the recent preseason match against Wycombe.

Helped by a few veterans, the young players won the match 5-0.

Izzy Brown and Patrick Bamford shone for Chelsea in the game and showed the depth that Mourinho has in his ranks.

Kurt Zouma also featured for the Blues-a £12 million signing last season, per Skillen-and he could be a surprise inclusion in Chelsea's first-team squad when the Premier League kicks off.

Skillen said of Zouma:

The 19-year-old looked far more assured once moved to centre-half next to John Terry. Showing awareness, calmness and the no-nonsense physical style that became his trademark in the French league, the defender will have impressed the travelling support.

The boys have a chance to impress their coach once again, and it is likely that Wimbledon will not have the quality to deal with the Blues' skilful kids.

It should be a good afternoon of work for the Chelsea lads as they look to make the best impression possible.

Chelsea should win the game comfortably as they prepare to play tougher opposition on their preseason tour.

Prediction: Wimbledon 1 Chelsea 4

It all comes down to sex and money: how the media are organized, how they work, what they say, who gets to say it, and to whom. That is the message this book delivers-and then parses for its meaning to society and culture. Forcefully and persuasively, this groundbreaking volume uses the media to show how questions of gender and economics are inextricably linked to issues of power in Western capitalist societies. Integrating political economy and feminism, it offers a new understanding of communi...

'Takeover will kill studios' - Piers Read, boss of Wimbledon Studios, resigns in row over multi-million pound takeover

Updated 11:11am Monday 28th July 2014 in News By Becky Middleton, Chief Reporter

Piers Reed who has resigned from Wimbledon Studios today

The boss of Wimbledon Studios has resigned today in the latest twist as part of an ongoing debate about a multi-million pound takeover of the business.

The announcement today that Piers Read, founder and managing director of the studios in Deer Park Road, Wimbledon, is leaving with immediate effect comes after months of negotiations with potential investors.

He said a planned takeover would 'kill' the studios and his position has become untenable.

A statement from Mr Read said he has been working to secure the investment and funding needed for an ambitious expansion.

David Smith, company secretary and financial controller has also resigned and will be leaving.

The spokesperson said: 'Despite Mr Read having secured funding from multiple interested parties, parent company Panther Securities PLC has resisted making a decision on his £10m offer for the freehold, leaving the future of the studios still in doubt and his position untenable.'

The news follows months of negotiations with potential investors for the internationally recognised studios to fund a £6m refurbishment and upgrade of the facilities which played host to dozens of television and film projects over the years.

In a statement today, Mr Read said: 'I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together in establishing Wimbledon as a leading studio facility in the UK, but we feel that our position has become increasingly untenable in recent months.

'We fundamentally disagree with the direction our parent company and freeholder, Panther PLC wishes to proceed.

'We believe this direction will kill Wimbledon Studios as it is known today, and we have no desire to be party to that.

'We feel this not only undervalues the work and success that has been achieved by the staff over recent years, but also fails to take advantage of the huge opportunities that currently exist.

'With studio space in London now at a premium, following the closure of a number of our closest competitors, the UK TV and film industry is in desperate need of exactly the type of facilities that Wimbledon could offer.'

Murray looking to regain Wimbledon magic

A year ago, Andy Murray arrived in Mason at the top of his game: The first British man in 77 years to win Wimbledon was on his way to New York to defend his U.S. Open title.

But after the Open, Murray underwent back surgery; underwent a coaching change, parting with Ivan Lendl in favor of Amelie Mauresmo; and on Sunday, arrived at the Western & Southern Open searching for his first title since Wimbledon, and maybe for some answers.

'I've messed up a lot of matches this year, to be honest,' said Murray, a two-time Western & Southern champion who's the No. 8 seed here this year.

Murray then cited chapter and verse the matches in which he's lost leads, including last week at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, where he was up 3-0 in the third set but fell to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

'My year could've looked a lot different had I finished those matches off, to be honest with you. I need to stop messing up when I'm ahead.'

Murray said his lack of consistent results hasn't hurt his confidence this week.

'You come back and you're not going to be maybe as confident because you haven't played so many matches,' Murray said. 'I was more concerned about my health maybe. But now for me is about winning. I feel healthy, and I trained extremely hard to get ready for this period, harder than I had since I came back from the surgery. I played well last week. I just messed up a few games and it cost me.'

Murray, 27, reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open (losing to Roger Federer), the semifinals at the French Open (losing to Rafael Nadal) and the quarters at Wimbledon (losing to Grigor Dimitrov).

He's playing just his second tournament since Wimbledon after training in Miami with Mauresmo, a former No. 1 women's player and two-time Grand Slam champion.

Mauresmo isn't with Murray here; she'll rejoin him before the U.S. Open. Murray said they communicate via texts and phone calls when she doesn't travel with him.

Among her priorities is to get Murray to come forward more often.

'I used to play a lot more at the net when I was young, a lot of serve and volley,' Murray said. 'That was something that I maybe wasn't encouraged to do and stopped doing. Last week I played pretty well up at the net.

'Still, we haven't spent loads of time together, and it takes time to improve things.'

Serena Williams Wimbledon Behavior Forgotten? Williams Dominant in U.S. ...

Serena Williams Wimbledon Behavior Forgotten? Williams Dominant in U.S. Open Prep [VIDEO]

This is the other side of the wonder that is Serena Williams.

Serena Williams 'not even thinking about' U.S. Open?

Williams, who just more than a month ago couldn't even bounce a tennis ball on the sport's biggest stage, on Sunday showed off her dominant self in beating Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-1 in the finals of the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio.

Like Us on Facebook

She needed just 62 minutes to put away Ivanovic, who needed 2 hours and 45 minutes to beat Maria Sharapova in the semifinals on Saturday.

Surprisingly, it was Williams' first-ever Western & Southern Open championship. Her previous best finish was a finals appearance last year, in which she lost to Victoria Azarenka.

Serena Williams invites the media to continue asking questions about her Wimbledon behavior

'Definitely my best performance of the summer,' she said, according to ESPN.com. 'Hopefully not the last. This is definitely a level that can take me to the (U.S. Open) title. I still have a lot of work to do. It's definitely a better level than I've played all year, to be honest.'

Williams did not advance past the fourth round in any of the first three Grand Slam events this season; yet her bounce-back performance this week makes her the favorite to capture the U.S. Open, which begins on Aug. 25.

Williams struggled with a tight back muscle during her semifinals win over Caroline Wozniacki that lingered early during Sunday's match as Ivanovic took an early 3-1 lead in the first set. But as Williams began to move better, she dominated.

Feeling better certainly is an understatement for Williams, who endured a month of speculation after her bizarre withdrawal from a Wimbledon doubles match in which she looked disoriented, struggled to catch any bouncing balls in warmups and couldn't get her serve over the net.

The video of her performance went viral, and rumors about her relationship with boyfriend/coach Patrick Mouratoglou spread like wildfire. Serena, who has had her share of controversy during her career, kept up the trend of adding to the speculation by saying only that she was 'under the weather' at Wimbledon and would seek more medical tests after the season.

After her victory against Ivanovic, there doesn't seem to be a need.

'It's the biggest final I've been in in a while. It feels good to be part of it,' she said. 'There are still a few points in my game that I feel I need to work on for the U.S. Open and also for the end of season. Definitely exciting times.'

Tennis Weighs Whether to Bring On the Noise

Muting tennis spectators has been one of the most revered rules in sports, but many top players say they would be ready for a new sound.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic, one of the most conscious crowd-pleasers in tennis, recognizes the assets other sports have for fan engagement.

'When I'm watching other sports I see, for example, in N.B.A., how it works, and how entertaining it is for the crowd to see big screens and always something happening in the timeouts when they're not playing,' he said. 'And even during play, you're able to scream, shout, whistle, do whatever you like.'

Andy Murray said players could adjust to louder surroundings.

'I think to be honest, players would get used to it if it was kind of loud all of the time,' he said. 'It's just when it's very quiet and then someone makes a noise, or when everyone is sitting down and someone stands up behind the court, then it's off-putting. But if people were moving around all of the time and always making noise, then the players would adjust.'

Murray acknowledged there were limits to what noise would be tolerable because tennis players need to be able to hear. 'We use our ears a lot to hear the spin that's on the ball or how hard it's coming at us, as well as our eyes,' he said. 'When there is a lot of noise or very loud music, it's quite hard to time the ball or know exactly how quick a ball is coming at you or with what spin. But yeah, I don't mind a bit of noise, so long as it's constant, really.'

Murray dealt with unexpected noise during his third-round match at the Western & Southern Open last week, when audio of an ESPN interview with Serena Williams blasted across his court, drawing laughs from the crowd and Murray himself when Williams said that he was her favorite player to watch because she related to how he often acted 'like a baby.'

The United States Open, which begins next Monday, stands out among the tennis tournaments for its sensory overload.

'I think we're all prepared that at the U.S. Open it's just loud and big and crowded,' Agnieszka Radwanska said. 'And nothing is going to change, I guess.'

Maria Sharapova, whose shrieking makes her one of the loudest players during points, said that she enjoyed feeding off the raucousness of the Flushing Meadows crowds.

'As the match goes on, of course you expect a few more people to get a bit more buzzed than at the beginning, which is normal,' she said. 'I actually quite like it, because you feel the energy, and they're not so shy anymore.

'You also have to understand, a bunch of people come to a tennis match for their very first time, without knowing what's going on - a good percentage of the stadium. And those are always fun, because you hear them more than the others.'

Players on outer courts frequently deal with noise infiltrating their court, whether it is music or announcements from the main court, a crowd bursting into applause after a point on an adjacent court, or even a nearby competitor grunting loudly.

Mike Bryan, who, like most doubles players, plays many matches outside the main stadium, said players were able to tune out such distractions.

'Everyone is good enough to block that stuff out,' he said. 'I think if it's better for the fans, grows the game, it's all positive.'

Mike's twin brother, Bob, added that discussions on how to increase crowds for doubles matches had included proposals allowing fans to talk during play and to enter, exit and move about the stands freely.

Djokovic, though, drew a line at significant amplification during points.

'We can't go that far, in terms of interaction during the play,' he said. 'But in the changeovers, between the sets, why not? I think the show is something that is also part of the sport, and something that attracts more attention from the crowd, and attracts more people, so I think it's a win-win situation in a way.'

Djokovic commended the efforts of United States Open organizers to keep crowds entertained with music and fan games during breaks in play, but he said he also appreciated the contrasting atmospheres on the tour.

'The U.S. Open does a good job in this way, but of course at Wimbledon, you will never see that,' he said. 'The beauty of the sport is also because you have different events that have their own tradition and history that they nurture and respect. Wimbledon, of course, has its tradition that is defining that tournament. You think about Wimbledon, you think about all white, that Centre Court, strawberries and cream, so forth. The U.S. Open is more entertainment, more show.'

Roger Federer, a five-time United States Open champion and a seven-time champion at Wimbledon, said there was far more variability in the crowds he found in New York, which he attributed to Wimbledon having only day sessions.

'The way the people clap at Wimbledon, it's consistent throughout,' he said. 'I'd say if it's a first set or a final set, it just gets slightly louder. Whereas the U.S. Open I find that there, it's cool to be at the U.S. Open, cool to watch the U.S. Open, but they're waiting for something to happen. They won't start clapping just right off the bat. So you feel there is a little pressure here and there. And then night is electric and really has the potential to go wild. Whereas the day session can go too, but there you need the swings of momentum, the five-set thriller, for the fans to get into it.'

Tomas Berdych, who reached his lone Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in 2010, said he preferred the hushed quiet of that tournament's Centre Court to the constant hum of Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows.

'Honestly, myself, I prefer the British crowds, London crowds,' he said. 'I think it's very special for tennis. When you stand on the baseline and start to bounce the ball, probably everybody can hear that. And then when you finish the rally, all the people are into it - probably that's the best feeling in tennis. I'm not saying it's bad in New York, definitely not. It's very unique, very special atmosphere, because to play on the stadium where it could be over 20,000 people, it's not really a daily experience. But they are a bit more loud.'

Berdych, who is No. 5, added that if crowd noise were encouraged between points, players would need more time than the current limit of 20 seconds to let it to subside. Time limits between points have been enforced more strictly in recent years to improve pace of play.

'If somebody wants to have more entertainment in our sport, then you cannot have this 20 seconds,' he said. 'It's really impossible to be loud during play, because this is a sport which really needs to be quiet. I would compare it to golf, and I would say it's even tougher.'

Golfers, Berdych said, have time to prepare for a shot and address the ball 'and be much more focused.'

'But we need to do that much more quickly, so we really need quiet in the play,' he said. 'But then after, O.K., let the people go crazy and wild even longer. But we need more time.'

Ernests Gulbis, one of the most outspoken players on tour, said that tennis should be appreciated for what it is, and that those seeking other forms of entertainment could find it elsewhere.

'Honestly? If I go to watch tennis, I want to watch tennis,' Gulbis said. 'If I want to go watch basketball, I'm going to go watch basketball. I don't care about those dancers; I don't care about those fireworks. I'm a basketball fan, and I go to watch it. If I go to theater, I want to watch the theater. I don't want to watch how the lights change in the upper part. It's exactly the same thing. You want to see dancing: Go to a nightclub; go to a bar.

'A tennis court is a tennis court. You don't bring chips; you don't bring drinks. It's part of respecting the players, respecting what they do. And if you want to do it after, go afterwards to a bar, no problem.'

If Scotland becomes independent, did a Brit still win Wimbledon?

It was the moment Britain waited 77 years for. Novak Djokovic hit the net. Andy Murray turned towards the crowd, dropped his racket and started shouting with joy. A Brit had won Wimbledon.

Except of course that that Brit might not be one much longer. Murray might have sounded critical of independence before, but if Alex Salmond has his way he'll soon be playing as a Scot. What would happen to that 2013 victory? Would a Brit still have won or would it retrospectively switch to Scotland?

The Lawn Tennis Association, who run Wimbledon, keep themselves out of it. They send inquiries on to the International Tennis Federation, which deals with national classification.

The federation hasn't really dealt with this type of situation before. Most of the time they are reacting to the break-up of a country, like Yugoslavia or the Soviet Union, not the breaking away of a nation to form an independent state.

The break-up of the Soviet Union provided many sports organisers with headaches. After all, Dynamo Kiev were the most successful Soviet football team. Given that Kiev isn't part of Russia (for the time being) that alludes to the variety of sporting achievements which were cloaked under the Soviet banner.

When the Soviet Union split up, each country's tennis record started from scratch and Russia assumed the historical records of the Soviet Union. The same thing happened a few years later when Serbia assumed the records of Yugoslavia. Who makes that decision? Apparently the federation does so - unilaterally. You can imagine an athlete from Ukraine feeling rather aggrieved that his Olympic medal is recorded for Russia. But regardless of how people feel about it, that's how the system works.

The Scottish issue is somewhat different, because Britain will continue to exist if it becomes independent. And indeed, the federation has confirmed to me that Murray's 2013 win will remain chalked up to Britain, no matter what happens next month.

'Whatever happens with Scottish independence a Briton won Wimbledon in 2013,' a spokesperson says. 'Scotland's records will start from scratch and no records are taken away from Britain.'

Wimbledon might be safe in the historical record, but it brings up issues about what Britain can claim from the past if Scotland breaks away. Was Adam Smith still a British economist? Did we still invent golf?

'We hear a lot about the changes that face Scotland if it becomes an independent country but the other side to that is what happens to what's left behind,' Andrew Blick, from the Institute of Contemporary British History at King College London, says.

'Part of the appeal of the UK is its cultural reach, the things that make it a force on the world stage but aren't about military power. We're going to lose a big chunk of what constitutes our soft power if Scotland goes. If Scotland leaves, that's a major psychological impact.'

Britain might always have that Wimbledon victory, but Scottish independence means it'll lose many of the other cultural elements which constitute its national identity.

With the 'No' camp ahead in the polls and Better Together seemingly heading for a victory, there's been little thought in the rest of the country about how it will feel in the event of independence. If there's an upset, it could be in for an identity crisis which makes Wimbledon look irrelevant.

Is it easier to win at Wimbledon or winning at the Lottery Powerball?

The Championships: One of the four major tennis tournaments around the globe.

Other news 06 Sep 2014 - 02:50 / by Federico Coppini / reads 21.Source:

The Championships: One of the four major tennis tournaments around the globe. The grass in England has more tradition than anywhere else. You could argue that US Open has brilliant completion in hard court. You can say that the clay court of Roland Garros makes the game more romantic. But there´s nothing like the bouncing tennis ball at Wimbledon grass courts. Wimbledon is the oldest tennis championship in the world. It´s also considered the most prestigious due to that and other relevant factors. It was created in 1877, when the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club organized the first tournament in tennis history. It had 22 players. In 1879, the tournament started with doubles and in 1884, women started competing. Nowadays, in 2014, the winner (both man and woman on singles) takes around one million pounds (around 1.6 million dollars) home. But what are the odds to win it all? We´re not talking about the odds of Novak Djokovic win it - because it´s around 2 to 1. If you pick an underdog to win at The Championships - let´s try Pablo Andrujar, for instance - the odds are 1 in 500 in most bookers. The Powerball Lottery winning odds for the jackpot prize is 1:175,223,509. By conclusion: yes, the odds of an underdog to win at Wimbledon are much smaller than winning at the English lottery.

That is what makes tennis a beautiful sport. The example of Gustavo Kuerten at Roland Garros in 1997, when an unknown came from nowhere to be champion, can happen anytime. Tennis is an individual sport. If a given player trains hard enough, he can beat other players, because it only depends on himself - nobody else. You have three sets to give your best in those white classic uniforms at The Championships. May the odds be in your favor.

The expression 'to endure the rally' is about those indeterminate moments of a rally where none of the players is leading.

The ability to endure the rally is fundamental when you play a 'long rally', because it offers you the chance to measure your opponent's strong points and vulnerabilities, besides letting you position as best as possible for your next offensive shot.
