Wimbledon 2014: Time, TV schedule, live streaming for Tuesday's matches

The quarterfinals will get underway on Tuesday, but Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will both be in action playing fourth-round matches.

The fourth round will continue on Tuesday at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships, along with the beginning of quarterfinals action. The draw hasn't lined up cleanly due to numerous weather delays throughout the tournament thus far, but Tuesday will have a few top-tier matchups worth watching.

Quarterfinals play will feature just two matches, both of which come from the women's bracket. No. 6 Petra Kvitova will take on unseeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Kvitova cruised through her fourth-round opponent, Shuai Peng, while Strycova also made it through her considerably tougher opponent, No. 16 seed Caroline Wozniacki.

The other match will see No. 22 Ekaterina Makarova of Russia battle No. 23 Lucie Safarova. The latter easily defeated unseeded Tereza Smitkova last round, but Makarova scored a much more impressive victory over No. 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-3, 6-0, to make it into the quarterfinals.

Fourth-round action on the day will include both No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal and No. 4 seed Roger Federer for the men. Nadal will meet the unseeded Nick Kyrgios, while Federer will face No. 23 seed Tommy Robredo. There will be higher seeds in action for the women as well, including No. 3 Simona Halep, who will go up against Zarina Diyas.

Television coverage will go through ESPN beginning at 8 a.m. ET. The full viewing schedule for Tuesday is listed below (all times Eastern):

TV schedule: 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (ESPN), 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. (ESPN2), 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. (ESPNEWS)

Nadal bounced in 4th round of Wimbledon by Australian teenager

increase font size

'That's something I'm never going to forget,' says Nick Kyrgios, the 144th-ranked player in the world,

LONDON - For the third year in a row, Rafael Nadal made an early exit from Wimbledon after a stunning loss to a player ranked 100th or lower.

Nick Kyrgios, a 19-year-old wild card from Australia with a world ranking of 144, served 37 aces and used a fearless go-for-broke style - he even hit a winning between-the-legs shot - to beat the No. 1-ranked Nadal 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 and reach the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

'I was in a bit of a zone out there,' Kyrgios said. 'I played some extraordinary tennis.'

On a day when former champion Maria Sharapova was eliminated in the fourth round and Serena Williams could barely hit a ball and had to pull out of a doubles match with a viral illness, Krygios made the biggest splash of all.

Playing in his first Wimbledon and fifth major, Kyrgios is the first player outside the top 100 to defeat a No. 1 at a Grand Slam since No. 193 Andrei Olhovskiy downed Jim Courier in the third round at Wimbledon in 1992.

Kyrgios served out the match against two-time champion Nadal at love, hitting an ace on match point. He dropped his racket to the Centre Court turf and held his head in his hands in amazement. He did a little dance to celebrate.

'That's the biggest win of my career obviously, and that's something I'm never going to forget,' he said. 'I'm going to draw so much confidence out of that no matter where I play now.'

Kyrgios is the first man to get to the quarterfinals in his Wimbledon debut in 10 years, the first teenager to defeat a No. 1 at a Grand Slam since a 19-year-old Nadal beat Federer at the 2005 French Open, and the lowest-ranked player to defeat Nadal at any Slam.

For Nadal, a two-time Wimbledon champion and 14-time major winner, it marked another shocking loss at the All England Club. In 2012, he was ousted in the second round by 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol. Last year, he fell to No. 135 Steve Darcis.

'The thing is this surface, when you have an opponent who decides to serve and to hit every ball very strong, you are in trouble,' Nadal said. 'In the second and the third set I was better than him, but I was not able to convert opportunities. And for the rest, he played better than me.'

Kyrgios, who saved nine match points in a second-round win over Richard Gasquet, looked like a star in the making, showing no nerves, flashing winners from all over the court, and dictating the play.

The 6-foot-4 (1.93-meter) Australian struck 70 winners, compared to 44 for Nadal. He dominated with his serve, with a fastest delivery of 133 mph (215 kph). He hit a casual winner between his legs from the baseline in the second set.

Kyrgios will next face eighth-seeded Milos Raonic, the first Canadian man to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Robert Powell in 1912. He beat No. 10 Kei Nishikori of Japan 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) 6-3.

Roger Federer kept up his bid for a record eighth Wimbledon title, beating Tommy Robredo 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals without the loss of a set.

Federer's win set up an all-Swiss duel with Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, who beat Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.

Sharapova, the 2004 champion, saved six match points before falling to Germany's Angelique Kerber 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 in a fourth-round match that lasted 2 hours, 37 minutes.

Kerber will next face Canada's Eugenie Bouchard, the only woman to reach the semifinals this year at both the Australian Open and French Open.

Serena Williams and sister Venus pulled out after only three games of a doubles match against Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegele.

'I thought I could rally this morning, because I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me,' Serena said in a statement a few hours later.

During the warmup, Serena had trouble collecting tennis balls and missed completely on some practice strokes.

In the match, she hit serves which bounced before reaching the net. Umpire Kader Nouni climbed down from his chair and walked over to speak to Serena. When the match was stopped, Serena wiped away tears as she left the court.

Another former champion, 2011 winner Petra Kvitova, beat fellow Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-1, 7-5. That set up an all-Czech semifinal against Lucie Safarova.

French Open runner-up Simona Halep and 2013 Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki won fourth-round matches and will face each other in the quarterfinals.

Wimbledon: Defending champion Andy Murray ousted in straight sets

French Open runner-up Simona Halep reached the Wimbledon semifinals with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Sabine Lisicki of Germany on Wednesday at London. The third-seeded Romanian won the final 11 games and next faces Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, who beat No. 9 Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 6-4, a day after Kerber upset fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova.Halep needed only 57 minutes to advance after trailing, thanks to 20 unforced errors by Lisicki, the 19th seed.

Wimbledon 2014: Did an argument with Kim Sears put Andy Murray off his game?

Even his opponent, 23-year-old tennis star Grigor Dimitrov, noted something was off about the former champion.

'As soon as we started to warm up, I sensed that his game was not at the highest level,' he said.

Murray, 27, rubbished Dimitrov's comments, claiming he had simply had a 'bad day at the office' and pointed out that he had break points in the very first game.

But he lost to the Bulgarian in three straight sets during the quarter-final match, leading many to speculate over what went wrong for the player, who appeared on peak form as he breezed through the early rounds relatively unchallenged.

In the second set, Murray was heard muttering the words 'shut the f*** up' to himself. In the third, as he clung onto the game for dear life down 4-2, he was heard again saying: 'Five minutes before the f***ing match.'

Since then, reports suggest the colourful mutterings were the result of some sort of incident that took place as he prepared to take to the court. His comments seemed to be aimed up at the players' box, where his new coach Amélie Mauresmo, his girlfriend Kim Sears and his mother Judy Murray were sitting.

Murray left the grounds at SW19 in an All England Club car straight after his post-match interview, before he'd even changed out of his tennis kit.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Sears, 26, looked visibly upset as she made a swift exit from the player's box. She left Wimbledon alone.

The couple's separate exit stood at a stark contrast to Murray's defeat in the finals. After losing out on the title to Roger Federer, they left together.

Murray's spokesperson Matt Gentry, who was sitting in the players' box, said he had not heard Murray's utterances but agreed that the British number one had seemed a little 'off his game'.

'He always mutters to himself,' he said. 'Occasionally his language is a bit colourful and he does talk to himself. I think they were utterances of frustration.'

However, he gave no indication of what could have been the source of his frustration and is yet to respond to further request for comment.

Before the tournament had started, bookies closed bets on Murray proposing to Sears at Wimbledon, because they believed the couple were already engaged.

Engagement confirmation odds reached 7/2 - the same for Murray winning Wimbledon - leading William Hill to close the book.

'Gambles such as these are often proved correct so we believe that the announcement is imminent - but for the gamble to win he still needs to win Wimbledon,' a William Hill spokesperson told The Independent last week.

Murray's crashing out of Wimbledon is the latest in a long line of sporting disappointments for the UK this summer. It follows England's worst ever performance at a World Cup in history, after they were knocked out of the tournament in Brazil with just one point.

No Storybook Finish, but Hope for More Chapters

WIMBLEDON, England - There was a telltale moment early in the second set of the men's Wimbledon final when Novak Djokovic, somehow trailing in a match he appeared to be dominating and in disbelief of a net-cord winner by Roger Federer, clasped his hands and looked to the sky for mercy.

Heaven wasn't listening. Earth, too, was not sympathetic. With the exception of those in his box and a few scattered souls around Centre Court, seemingly everyone had cast Djokovic as the valiant supporting actor - if not an actual villain - in what was supposed to be the Hollywood ending to Wimbledon 2014.

Not a vocational ending for Federer, mind you, who made sure to tell the crowd, 'See you next year,' before walking off a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4 loser to Djokovic in a tense 3-hour-56-minute match that washed away the aftertaste of Saturday's lopsided women's final.

Had he won, with his 33rd birthday a month away, Federer would have become the oldest Wimbledon champion of the Open era. Had he done it after trailing by 5-2 in the fourth set and facing match point, it would have been - beyond the bookend Grand Slam trophy to define the twilight of his career - the stuff of legend.

Federer was born on the eighth day of the eighth month in 1981, just more evidence for the tennis world - and Djokovic, as he appeared to battle fate along with Federer - to believe that the great Swiss champion would ultimately win his record eighth Wimbledon and, yes, his 18th career Grand Slam title.

Djokovic is not an unlikable guy, far from it, even if his idea of a good time is hanging around in a hyperbaric chamber (for conditioning purposes). Like Federer, he'd had his share of Grand Slam hardship in recent years, losing five of his previous six finals.

Against Federer, on this particular stage, that wasn't going to be enough to earn him much more than the polite Centre Court decorum, especially with Federer's 4-year-old twin daughters, Myla and Charlene, perched on the laps of his wife, Mirka, and mother, Lynette.

Federer's family is royalty at Wimbledon, where he won the junior boys' title in 1998. Think about that. In a sport that can burn people out faster than Wall Street, here was Federer, 16 years later, a stroke here or there away from doing it again.

After allowing Federer to stagger into a first-set tiebreaker and managing to lose it, Djokovic righted himself in the second and third sets and for much of the fourth. He was destroying Federer with his service games, winning most of them at love or 15.

Djokovic's serve is not the biggest in tennis, and Federer has had plenty of experience returning it in 34 previous matches. But, as Federer said: 'You know, I think it's one thing not to break. That can happen if the other guy plays well in the big moments and all that stuff. But it was really not creating enough opportunities to put Novak under pressure, you know?' In other words, he wasn't getting so much as a sniff. And suddenly, as if he had just flipped a switch, Federer was spraying winners all over against Djokovic's serve, enjoying break-fest at Wimbledon three times in the fourth set, and winning five straight games to even the match and send Djokovic off to a bathroom timeout to ponder the awful possibilities.

Boris Becker, his coach, later recalled, 'We were all dying out there.' Around Centre Court, and probably the viewing world, there had to be a feeling that it was really going to happen for Federer - just how his eventual documentarian would want it.

Even pragmatic tennis minds paid for their analysis were inclined to believe that Djokovic had gotten an ethereal message from an authority much higher than the umpire's chair.

'He should have won in three sets, and then when he blew the fourth, I thought he was done,' Martina Navratilova said. 'He was hanging his head, dragging his leg.'

Said Patrick McEnroe: 'He could have folded, and it wouldn't have shocked you. That's why he took a bathroom break, an injury timeout - he was doing whatever he could to stay in the moment. Because if he looked at the bigger picture, which is what we all do, he could have easily said, 'It's not meant to be.' '

For his part, Djokovic said, 'These are the critical moments a tennis player goes through in his own mind.' But what could he possibly have been thinking when Federer saved three more break points - 11 of 15 over all - in the eighth game of the fifth set, and had the audacity to come in behind a 98-mile-an-hour second serve on the last one?

On what had been a partly cloudy day, the evening sun was shining over Centre Court now, seemingly brighter on Federer. But then he put a step-back overhead into the net at 15-all in the ninth game. Djokovic served it out, broke Federer at 15 and was soon heaving with emotion as he held onto the trophy.

In a departure from past painful losses, Federer shed no tears. Instead, he said: 'It's even more memorable when I see my kids there with my wife and everything. That's what touched me the most, to be quite honest. The disappointment of the match itself went pretty quickly.'

He joined them soon enough, holding hands with his daughters, who wore matching floral dresses, as they entered the outdoor players' lounge to greet friends, while photographers snapped happily away.

Federer, also the father of 3-month-old twin sons, Leo and Lennart, is a long way from his junior title. He is a private man with a public life who wants it to be only about the tennis.

Is he playing on in pursuit of a storybook ending?

If he is, it is probably with the understanding that it may never actually happen, and that there is nevertheless a whole lot more to life.

Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard seeded sixth at next month's Rogers Cup

TORONTO - Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard will be the sixth seed at the upcoming Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament while fellow Canadian Milos Raonic will be seeded seventh in the men's event.

Top-ranked Serena Williams of the United States is the top women's seed and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia is the top men's seed. The women will play Aug. 1-10 at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal and the men will play Aug. 2-10 at Rexall Centre in Toronto.

The seedings follow the official ATP World Tour and WTA rankings released Monday. Each tournament features 15 of the top-16 ranked players.

The top eight seeds in each draw will receive first-round byes. Williams won the women's tournament last year while Spain's Rafael Nadal beat Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., in the men's final.

Nadal is seeded second this year, ahead of Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and Czech player Tomas Berdych. The women's top five is rounded out by Li Na of China, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland and Russia's Maria Sharapova.

World No. 8 Juan Martin Del Potro has withdrawn due to his ongoing recovery from wrist surgery. Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria replaces him as the No. 8 seed and will get a first-round bye.

Bouchard, from Westmount, Que., reached her first Wimbledon final earlier this month before losing to Kvitova. Raonic reached the men's semifinals at the All England Club before falling to Federer, who lost to Djokovic in the final.

The Rogers Cup tournament draws will be held Friday.

Is Eugenie Bouchard out of her funk? A look at the post

When Eugenie Bouchard takes on Sorana Cirstea in the second round at the U.S. Open on Thursday night, her fans will be watching to see if she has finally shaken off her post-Wimbledon funk.

Her summer hardcourt season was mostly a bust as she prepared for the final tennis Grand Slam of the season. Already she had taken a rocket ride through the women's tour, winning her first WTA title in Nuremberg, earning a spot in the semi-finals of the first three majors and making the final at Wimbledon, where she lost to Petra Kvitova. After taking two weeks off right after Wimbledon to rest from a long stretch of tennis, she was bound to be rusty.

The question was: could she gear herself back up for one last push to the end of the season? It would be difficult. Her season was already a huge success, but the mental and physical strain of it might make it difficult to overcome the inertia of a break. Yes, she's only 20 years old and the physical part should be easy to overcome. But a 20-year-old might also find it tougher to cope with the mental and emotional stress of competing at that level for a long period for the first time as a professional.

The recent New York Times feature on Bouchard pulled the curtain back a little on the strain Bouchard was hiding behind her steely exterior:

At Wimbledon, after she won the last point in the semifinals against Halep, she threw her arms up in a V for the briefest of moments, then quickly lowered them, unsmiling, as if she had already given too much away. Even in the final against Kvitova, a former champion who was playing one of the best matches of her career, Bouchard seemed relatively composed between points, even as she strained for shots that outmatched her speed. That she had been aiming higher was apparent. 'I don't know if I deserve all your love today,' Bouchard told the Wimbledon audience, which had clearly favored her, 'but I really appreciate it.'

Forty-five minutes later, she was with her mother, Julie Leclair, sobbing in her arms. 'It was a tough loss,' Leclair said. 'Plus it was two weeks of emotion.'

Bouchard has been praised all year for her tough mind that elevates a game with obvious talent but no major weapons. (Despite being in the top 10 in the world, the only statistic in which Bouchard appears in the top 10 in the official WTA match stats is in eighth place in points won on second serve returns.) Still, re-engaging after Wimbledon was going to be difficult.

And was it ever. She skipped her first planned return in Washington and threw herself right back in the fire at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, her hometown. Her wildly improbable 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 loss to Shelby Rogers in the second round - after a first-round bye as a top-eight seed - was not ideal. She lost in three sets to former Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in Cincinnati, which showed some revival of her game. She beat Bojana Jovanovski 6-1, 6-1 in her first match in New Haven but then was dismantled 6-2, 6-2 by a resurgent Sam Stosur in the second round.

So Bouchard was left with 10 sets of tennis to get ready for a deep run at the U.S. Open. Would it be enough?

To measure her progress, we gathered the data on her serving stats both at Wimbledon and in her hardcourt matches. Unlike Milos Raonic, who uses his serve to bludgeon his opponents into submission, Bouchard, like most successful players, needs to keep control of her serve by putting first serves in play and winning the points. Below we present her first-serve and second-serve stats in separate charts.

The Rogers match stands in stark contrast to her victories: under 50% in points won on successful first serves and barely over 50% in even getting her first serve in. It's shocking how closely it resembles the plot from the Wimbledon final against Kvitova, who many say played the perfect match.

On Thursday night, Cirstea should be the next good test to see where Bouchard is on her re-engagement. The Romanian reached a career-high No. 21 in the rankings last year, but is currently languishing at No. 80. Only once has Cirstea gone past the second round at Flushing Meadows and that was in 2009.

Wimbledon 2014: Schedule and Bracket Predictions for Day 2 at All England Club

We're only entering Day 2 of the Wimbledon Championships from the legendary All England Club, and we've already seen a bevy of spectacular performances, thrilling finishes and upset victories.

Expect more of the same on Tuesday.

Tennis' brightest stars will take the court in an effort to get through first-round action and move deeper into the tournament.

This is no easy feat for even the world's best players, as Wimbledon's field is immensely strong.

Needless to say, not a single serve should be missed on Tuesday, so here's a look at the day's schedule, followed by a few predictions for notable matches.

    SI.com

The complete tournament schedule can be found at SI.com. (2) Rafael Nadal vs. Martin Klizan

    Dan Kitwood/Getty Images

The King of Clay certainly had some trouble on the grass last year.

Nadal comes into Wimbledon after having been knocked out in the first round by Steve Darcis in 2013. Yes, Nadal was just coming off injury at that time, but the thought should be expected to creep into the No. 2 seed's mind.

Although, even if Nadal is thinking about that loss, he's not showing it during interviews. Here's what he had to say ahead the match, per Simon Cambers of The Guardian:

After winning Roland Garros last year, probably emotionally, I went down a little bit after that. Last year, I was not 100% ready for the grass. I knew my knee was not perfect yet and grass is very aggressive for my knee because I need to play very low.

But this year is a different story. Overall the feeling this year is better with my knee. I feel a little more comfortable running, and that's very important.

Nadal certainly appears ready to compete, and he's coming into Wimbledon in great shape this year.

Klizan and Nadal have only faced off once before-a match Nadal won in four sets at Roland Garros in 2013. Expect to see a similar result on Tuesday.

Nadal def. Klizan; 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 (1) Serena Williams vs. Anna Tatishvili

    Clive Brunskill/Getty Images

Williams should be expected to have a big chip on her shoulder when she takes the court on Tuesday after coming off a terrible early loss in the French Open.

A tweet from Ben Rothenberg of The New York Times sums up Williams' mood heading into Wimbledon nicely:

To say Serena Williams is in a mood would be an understatement. Never seen her so shut down in press, ever. #Wimbledon

    - Ben Rothenberg (@BenRothenberg) June 21, 2014

Beyond the Baseline tweeted a very telling comment as well:

Q: 'How long did it take you to get over the French Open loss?' Serena Williams: [long pause] 'Who says I'm over it?' #wimbledon

    - Beyond The Baseline (@SI_BTBaseline) June 21, 2014

Get ready to see some fire from Williams in the first round at the All England Club on Tuesday.

Tatishvili is 0-2 against Williams, having lost twice to the No. 1 seed in straight sets in 2013. Unfortunately for Tatishvili, she's meeting Williams at the wrong time and will suffer the same result once more.

Williams def. Tatishvili; 6-1, 6-1 (4) Roger Federer vs. Paolo Lorenzi

    Dan Kitwood/Getty Images

Federer has a long history of success at Wimbledon, winning the tournament seven times over his illustrious career.

He's been playing well lately and has all the confidence in the world entering Tuesday's match. A tweet from ATP World Tour confirms how he's feeling about his chances:

.@rogerfederer is confident he can add an eighth @Wimbledon title to his trophy collection. http://t.co/3Ucxum4CM3 http://ift.tt/1itkCgG

    - ATP World Tour (@ATPWorldTour) June 22, 2014

This isn't a new trend for Federer. He recently won on grass in Halle after performing admirably at Roland Garros. That amount of momentum has him extremely confident in his game right now.

He spoke of his mentality during a press conference, via ESPN.com:

I feel like, yeah, if things click here, I should be able to win the tournament. I feel I have a very good chance again this year. I hope to utilize my fitness, the amount of matches I've played this year. So I'm really coming in with a much better feeling.

This year. I feel all the options are there. Return, serve, serve and volley, come in, my backhand-everything is working to my liking. For that reason, I feel I'm a bit more relaxed mentally, because I know it is there. I clearly want to do better than last year, there's no doubt about it.

Federer's been here before, and he won't find himself in any sort of trouble during his Round 1 match on Tuesday.

    Federer def. Lorenzi; 7-5, 6-4, 6-3

    Tuesday, August 12, 2014

Wimbledon 2014: Order of play for 25 June

Murray cantered through his first round tie against David Goffin as he dispatched the Belgian in straight-sets. He takes on Serbian Rola in the first match of the day on Court One, having begun his campaign as the opening match on Centre Court.

With Murray absent from the showpiece court, Number One seed Novak Djokovic will be the main attraction of the day as he takes on Radek Stepanek in the final match of the day.

Djokovic is bidding to win at the All England Tennis Club for a second time after his 2011 success, and is looking to avenge his defeat to Murray in last year's final should the two meet in the semi-finals as they are on course to do so.

The Serbian came through his opening tie against Andrey Golubev to set-up the meeting with Stepanek in what is likely to be the match of the day.

Nadal, Sharapova but rain delays much of Wimbledon

Serena Williams of the United States walks off court as the rain causes a delay in play during her Ladies' Singles third round match against Alize Cornet of France on day six of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon on June 28, 2014 in London, England. Rain halted play on most Wimbledon courts after only about 15 minutes of tennis.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is playing No. 63 Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan under the retractable roof of Centre Court, followed by 2004 champion Maria Sharapova and seven-time winner Roger Federer.

The forecast is for heavy, slow-moving showers in the afternoon with some sunshine in the evening, according to the Met Office.

Top-seeded woman and five-time winner Serena Williams was tied one game all with France's Alize Cornet, who beat the top-seeded American this year, when light rain halted action.

Soccer players David Beckham and Sir Bobby Charlton and India's record setting cricketer Sachin Tendulkar are among the guests in the Royal Box today along with British Olympic cyclists Sir Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton.

Was 2014 Wimbledon Final Roger Federer's Greatest Match at All England Club?

Watching Maestro Roger Federer span 12 years of beautiful tennis at Wimbledon is the centerpiece to tennis' most glamorous golden age. Somehow his result in losing to Novak Djokovic for the 2014 championship is less the story than a living renewal of yet another brilliant performance that only extends his legacy.

It's as if The Beatles could have put out another album in 1972. Federermania has actually been a creative force longer than Beatlemania, and in the tennis world it is the very standard of masterpiece theatre.

There have been other incomparable champions at tennis' holy cathedral, the All England Club, and they can all be summarized and remembered in the Open era as unique and brilliant originals:

Bjorn Borg's self-made assimilation of topspin-approach tennis at a time of wooden rackets, as if Johannes Gutenberg were trying to digitalize his printing press.

John McEnroe's old-school brilliance was a textbook to tennis' past. He was a tennis Raphael, both painter and architect with his touch and angles.

Pete Sampras' power serve and volley are still the greatest dominance on grass. He was efficient, ruthless and unconquerable as if the industrial revolution had sprung up in the middle of Ancient Greece.

And yet, Federer's longevity and artistry on grass is an entire museum of seemingly tangible performance marvels. He's the embodiment of an heroic evolution that has taken one decade of tennis and advanced it 30 years. He has adapted through new conditions and competitors on grass, and under the scrutiny and expectations of a technically wired global audience, taking the entire sport of tennis with him as his competitors morphed into unrelenting cyborgs, designed to counter his genius.

How do you sort out his greatest matches? Even if we narrow this down to the nine times he has appeared in a Wimbledon final, it's a Bayeux Tapestry with more richness and astonishing matches than should be possible for any one player.

Maybe it should be forbidden to compare Federer's great Wimbledon five-set finals with each other, as if we were rating his sets of twins. In a way the symmetry is also fitting: Two brilliant five-set wins (2007, 2009) and two brilliant five-set losses (2008, 2014).

But great art deserves more than a silent stroll and a nod through a museum. It beckons for admiration and discussion, sharing and memories. We are compelled to ask the question: Was Federer's 2014 Wimbledon final his greatest performance at the All England Club?

    2007 vs. Rafael Nadal

In 2007, Federer was completing the most dominant four-year run in tennis history. He would win 11 of the 16 major titles in that time (2004-07), and so thoroughly dominate his own generation that many tennis observers to this day wonder how it was possible one man could obliterate the entire ATP tour. It's even taken on mythical framing and explanations, and the shouting has never been silenced.

The best part of the 2007 Wimbledon final was finally seeing Federer pushed somewhere other than Roland Garros-where clay-king Rafael Nadal was already building his own impregnable dynasty. And it was Nadal, Federer's nemesis and biggest matchup nightmare, who showed the Wimbledon world just how great Federer could be.

Could Federer win a close, five-set match against another legendary champion rather than a flawed contender? The 2007 final answered this once and for all. The scoreline showed Federer winning 7-6(7), 4-6, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-2, but the drama and set exchanges brought out the best tennis at Centre Court since 1980.

There was history as Bjorn Borg watched Federer equal his record of five consecutive Wimbledon titles. For his part, Federer had now won 54 straight matches on grass, including 34 straight at the All England Club.

Federer also had to battle the frustrations of Nadal's baseline tenacity and of the seemingly conspiratorial Hawk-Eye replay system that decided in Nadal's favor three critical times, including at the start of the fourth set. ' It's just killing me today. How in the world was that ball in?' Federer ranted at chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Meanwhile, Nadal had ripped through Federer in the fourth set, taken a medical timeout for his knee, and he had looked ready to dethrone the Swiss Maestro.

But it was Federer who held on early in the fifth, regrouped and then turned on his familiar dose of dominance with awesome serving, big forehands and an avalanche of will. It punctuated perhaps his greatest victory, all things considered. Later, ESPN's Sportscenter segments questioned if this was the greatest match in history.

It was his last victory against Nadal in a major, and it might have been the most impressive win of Federer's career. It displayed his greatness in winning an epic match, showing the resilience and toughness that has propelled him to 17 major titles and countless other records.

    2008 vs. Rafael Nadal

If 2007 was the absolute peak of Federer's career, 2008 Wimbledon was his toughest defeat in the blockbuster Wimbledon trilogy. Even so, he summoned up a match for the ages against Nadal that would not be decided until the sun set forever on their Wimbledon rivalry.

Two legendary champions battling it out in their prime years. It would come to overshadow the 2007 final through another round of 'greatest match ever' hoopla. It even spawned L. Jon Wertheim's book Strokes of Genius, and it was the autobiographical vehicle in Rafa with John Carlin.

Nadal fans who like the outcome would be more inclined to name this the greatest match of all time, so how can Federer fans find solace in a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(8), 9-7 loss?

Certainly Federer chased Nadal since the coin toss, but he never stopped digging in, cracking his forehand and looking for a way back. It was a new role for him after being primarily a dominant front-runner in previous years.

In between rain delays and soul searching, the drama increased with a fourth-set tiebreaker when Federer staved off two match points. He produced 13 break-point opportunities, but as usual his frustrations with his single backhand against Nadal's lefty serve on the ad side of the court was like drinking coffee with a fork. He would only convert one of these breaks, and this in the fifth set when it seemed like he would pull off the win.

In addition, Federer had been routed at Roland Garros a month earlier by Nadal. A lesser champion would have packed it in after two sets, let alone raised his game to nearly pull off a comeback for the ages in a match for all times.

    2009 vs. Andy Roddick

Andy Roddick was a good champion, but Federer always had another gear. Perhaps their 2004 Wimbledon final confirmed this more than anything. Roddick bombed serves, unleashed big forehands and pushed Federer for a chance to establish a rivalry. It was not enough. He would ultimately be no match for the Swiss Maestro a year later at Wimbledon and for the 2006 U.S. Open final. It was no more a rivalry than Muhammad Ali against his punching bag.

But in the 2009 Wimbledon final, Roddick summoned up the greatest effort of his career. He served up scorching aces, but he also defended the baseline with his life. Had it not been for blowing a 6-2 tiebreaker lead, including a botched backhand volley at 6-5, Roddick would have had a two-set lead.

The match itself was a slugfest of serving, more reminiscent of the 1990s with Pete Sampras and Goran Ivanisevic throwing rocks at each other. But Federer was locked into the challenge of keeping pace with Roddick's big serve as if their thunderbolts were to decide the fate of the world. Federer would also hit 50 aces in the match to Roddick's 27.

In the fifth set, Federer simply would not relent. At 8-8, Roddick threatened with two break points at 15-40, but Federer wiped them away with his big eraser-two huge serves.

'I ask you kill Superman, and you're telling me you couldn't even do that one, simple thing,' stammered malevolent CEO Ross Webster to meek employee Gus Gorman in Superman III. For Roddick, d efeating Federer turned out to be a tougher impossibility.

Federer would win his only break of serve for the entire match with Roddick trying to hold on at 14-15. He completed the Channel Slam (French Open-Wimbledon within one month) for the only time of his career, and he won his record-breaking 15th major as Sampras looked on through sunglasses. It would be the last time Federer would win back-to-back majors.

The line reads 5-7, 7-6(6), 7-6(5), 3-6, 16-14. Was this Federer's greatest Wimbledon final ever? Top three or four Wimbledon matches of all time? Some fans could successfully argue that this one tops them all. It might have been Federer's greatest triumph.

    2014 vs. Djokovic

An instant classic needs time to simmer and let the emotions evaporate. We know that Federer vs. Djokovic was a great match for several reasons, but where does it rank in the Federer collection of greatest hits?

Federer is nearly 33 years old, so does that make his recent loss more impressive than if he were 23 or 28? Did his struggles in 2013 make this performance more special?

Was Federer 2014 better than Wimbledon champion Federer 2012?

Was Andy Murray, Federer's 2012 Wimbledon final opponent, better than 2014 Djokovic?

If Djokovic had closed out Federer for a 6-2 four-set victory, would we revisit this match?

Maybe tennis observers could compare Federer's valiant comeback to the 2009 match against Andy Roddick, but there are far more differences than similarities. The Roddick match, more like a rock fight, did not become truly magical until the tension of the fifth set. The ending was the drama.

In more ways, Federer vs. Djokovic mirrored the 2008 final vs. Nadal. Federer had to save two championship points in the fourth set, and then it looked as if he could ride his momentum to a win. In both cases he could not quite hold on against great returners.

There was very high quality of play and contrast with Federer vs. Djokovic, plenty of drama from the fourth set and late into the fifth. Federer would end the match with 75 winners and only 29 unforced errors. Djokovic would have only 68 and 27 respectively. This was clean and aggressive tennis.

Both players dealt efficiently with their strengths and control. Federer's slice shots and ability to draw Djokovic out of his rhythm took guile, grit and the support of his newer, larger racket. He also employed more of the mentality he needed from coach Stefan Edberg's modified and flexible blueprint.

Unfortunately for Federer, a few unforced errors assisted a more abrupt and anticlimactic ending. The returning pressure from Djokovic outlasted Federer's serving, and he deserves all the credit in the world for his 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 win.

Maybe the better question is to take it from the Djokovic angle: Was this a better or more epic win than his five-set marathon against Nadal at the 2012 Australian Open?

Sincerely, this has been the best quality Grand Slam final that I have ever been part of. I've had a longest final against Nadal in the (2012) Australian Open. But quality-wise from the first to last point, this is definitely the best match. It's the most special Grand Slam final I've played.

Federer did not win his 18th major but he could have. His talent and heart were proved long ago, but the continued saga of his exploits is still astonishing regardless of the context. He is the common denominator for four fairly recent Wimbledon classics, and yet we almost come to expect it.

Andy Samberg and Kit Harington to Team Up In HBO's Wimbledon Mockumentary

    Tennis, anyone?

Andy Roddick and Andy Murray are about to be joined by a new tennis-playing Andy: Andy Samberg. The comedian will not be playing at the U.S. Open any time soon, but he will be honing his backhand to play a tennis bad boy opposite Game of Thrones star Kit Harington (a.k.a. Jon Snow) in an upcoming HBO mockumentary called 7 Days in Hell.

Samberg will play 'tennis' superstar bad boy' Aaron Williams, who is up against Harington's Charles Poole, 'a tennis prodigy and certified truck driver,' facing off during a legendary seven-day match at Wimbledon, according to Deadline. While the story sounds far-fetched, it has roots in reality. Back in 2010, Wimbledon hosted an epic match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, who battled it out for 11 hours over three days, with Isner eventually winning, 70-68 in the fifth set.

Rounding out the cast of the mockumentary will be Fred Armisen, Lena Dunham, Karen Gillan (as a supermodel and Charles's childhood best friend), Howie Mandel, Soledad O'Brien (as herself), Michael Sheen and Mary Steenburgen (as Charles's crazed mother). Nebraska stars Will Forte and June Squibb will reunite on screen as well, with Forte playing a tennis historian.

The HBO original was written by Girls and American Dad! writer Murray Miller and is based on a concept by Miller and Samberg. SNL and Funny or Die's Jake Szymanski will direct.

Southend United 0, AFC Wimbledon 1

Southend United 0, AFC Wimbledon 1

9:43pm Tuesday 19th August 2014 in Sport By Chris Phillips

Phil Brown - saw his side suffer a 1-0 defeat against AFC Wimbledon at Roots Hall

SOUTHEND United sunk to their first league defeat of the season at Roots Hall tonight, suffering a 1-0 defeat against AFC Wimbledon.

The Shrimpers wasted a number of opportunities in the first half with Myles Weston and Shaq Coulthirst both being denied.

But the Dons stood firm and secured victory for the third season in succession away at Blues, with George Francomb firing home on the hour mark.

Southend's wastefulness in front of goal began after just three minutes when Weston raced clean through on goal.

But, with just Dons goalkeeper James Shea to beat, the Shrimpers striker attempted to fire home with the outside of his left foot and sent his shot well wide of the right post.

In reply, AFC Wimbledon midfielder Francomb saw a well struck 25 yard volley smartly saved to his left by Blues custodian Daniel Bentley.

But Blues were soon back on top and almost broke the deadlock when midfielder Conor Clifford charged forward and curled a 20 yard shot just inches wide of the right post.

Moments later his midfield partner Ryan Leonard sent a swerving effort straight at Shea before the Dons goalkeeper did well to top a well struck shot from Shaq Coulthirst over the crossbar after the on loan Tottenham Hotspur youngster had turned superbly on the edge of the penalty area.

Coulthirst then slashed another effort wide of the target after being brilliantly teed up by a cross-field ball from Weston.

After that missed opportunity the game died down and the second half also started quietly until the visitors opened the scoring on the hour mark, with Francomb scoring an excellent effort.

The ball was rolled in to the midfielder's path from a Sean Rigg free-kick and he brilliantly curled a 25 yard shot in to the top right hand corner of the net.

Blues boss Phil Brown responded to going behind by making a double substitution which saw David Worrall replacing John White at right-back and Lee Barnard coming on for Barry Corr in attack.

After the changes, the Shrimpers almost drew back level when their ex captain Adam Barrett saw his sliced clearance from Kevan Hurst's left wing cross instinctively blocked by Shea.

Moments later, Kevan Hurst's right wing cross was met by the head of Barnard whose close range effort was superbly tipped over the crossbar by Shea.

With Blues remaining on top, Weston then saw an effort cleared off the line by Barry Fuller but the Shrimpers were unable to conjure up a late equaliser despite there being six minutes of added on time.

Andy Murray endured a frustrating night in New York as he lost to Novak ...

Andy Murray was two-and-a-half sets away from being the player who can challenge for Grand Slam titles again - he was so close he could taste it. And then his legs turned to lead, his back stiffened up, his chance was gone, and Novak Djokovic motored past him and into the US Open semi-finals.

For the first two-and-a-half sets on Wednesday night, Murray had taken on the world No1 and matched him. He had hit his forehand like a sledgehammer, he had fought back into contention in each of the first two sets, and he was playing better than he had played in 14 months. But for a poor first-set tiebreak, he could have been two sets up with a stranglehold on the match.

Yet for all the work Murray has done this summer to get back to his physical peak, all the lung-bursting effort to strengthen his body after the operation he had on his back last September, nothing can replace regular competition against the world's best.

Facing Djokovic in big matches week in, week out, made Murray battle-hardened when he faced his old foe in the Wimbledon final last year and in the US Open final in 2012. This time he was fit but he was going into the fight without that extra coat of armour and, in the end, it cost him the match 7-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.

'I haven't played enough matches at that level this year,' Murray said as the clock ticked towards 2am and the disappointment and the tiredness sat heavy on his shoulders.

'It's obviously different playing at that level, playing against the No1 in the world and the way that we play against each other, it's just an extremely physical match. When me and Novak play against each other, you obviously see a very tight match, long rallies. Both of us do a lot of running.

'It doesn't matter how much training you do, when you get on the match court it's different. I can't practice with the best player in the world, so it's tough to practice at that intensity.'

When he came back from the surgery and started the new season, Murray knew he would have to be patient. For six months he put up with the frustrations of not being physically ready to push for the big titles, but once Wimbledon was over and his body was fully healed, he had pinned everything on being ready to challenge properly for the US Open.

After a tricky start to the tournament, he proved in the last two rounds that he is back, he is hungry, and he is ready to play with the big boys again. That made losing on Wednesday all the harder to take.

He can use the US Open as a launchpad for the rest of this year and for the new season, but still he has to wait until January and the Australian Open before he gets a sniff of another major title.

'I set my goals up to now, basically, and did everything after Wimbledon to prepare for now, for the US Open,' he said.

'Right now I'm obviously disappointed. But there was some good tennis. I obviously haven't analysed the match or had time to think about it yet but there was some good tennis there.

'Hopefully I can build on that. I can do better. But it's a shame. Obviously, the Slams are over for this year, so I have to wait a few months before the next one.'

But if Murray was down in the dumps, Boris Becker, Djokovic's coach, was far more upbeat. His man had reached the semi-finals - he was obviously happy about that - but after watching every match the Scot had played in New York, he could see what the future held for Murray. And once the disappointment had worn off, there would be plenty to look forward to.

'The first two-and-a-half sets Andy hit the ball as cleanly as I have seen him do it in a long time,' Becker said. 'He hit the forehand hard but maybe it took its toll. The serve, forehand and backhand package was Andy at his very best.

'It seemed like his back stiffened up towards the end, but then it is hard to play against Novak - he is the fittest guy on tour.

'I would expect Andy to have a good finish to the season on that evidence. There's a good base for him to work from over the next six months.'
