Wimbledon 2014: Federer and Djokovic Clash, as Their Coaches Once Did

WIMBLEDON, England - The best of two generations of men's tennis will collide Sunday when Roger Federer plays Novak Djokovic for the Wimbledon title with Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker looking on as coaches of the finalists.

The top-seeded Djokovic, at 27, is in his prime, while Federer is weeks shy of his 33rd birthday. He is already the record-holder in career Grand Slam titles, with 17, but he is without one since he won here two years ago. Djokovic, a 2011 Wimbledon champion, has not won a Grand Slam event since the 2013 Australian Open.

One thing is certain: Whatever stylistic influence Edberg has had on Federer and Becker on Djokovic in the brief times they have been partnered, a celebration of the serve-and-volley tennis played by the retired Wimbledon champions (Becker in 1985, 1986 and 1989; Edberg in 1988 and 1990) is unlikely.

Becker, a German, enjoyed a 25-10 head-to-head advantage against Edberg, a Swede, but Edberg won two of the three Wimbledon finals they played. Those defeats were crushing to Becker, who called Edberg 'the toughest rival I have had in my career.'

If the playing styles have changed in this era of slower grass courts, Becker and Edberg have teamed with players more similar to them emotionally.

Becker was fiery, known for his acrobatics on grass. Djokovic does not try hard to conceal his emotions, letting out primal howls after peak points, good and bad.

Like Edberg, Federer is more interested in expressing himself with his tennis, although he is not a classic stoic like the Swede.

While Edberg has been pushing Federer to attack the net more in pursuit of a record eighth Wimbledon title, he has done so more strategically with the ball in play. Earlier in the tournament, he conceded that coming in behind a big forehand or a backhand chip approach becomes more challenging as the quality of the opponent improves.

In his semifinal match against Milos Raonic, Federer dictated play except when overpowered by Raonic's rocket serves. When Djokovic ventured in against Grigor Dimitrov, he looked unsure of his footing, as well as his volley selection.

Federer predicted a match of many groundstrokes.

'We both like to be close to the baseline,' he said. 'We both like to take charge, especially on quicker courts. He has a wonderful way of either redirecting or taking the ball early, you know, taking pace from the opponent, even generating some of his own. So I think that's what makes him so hard to play. There's not really a safe place you can, you know, play into.'

They have only played once on grass, the 2012 Wimbledon semis, Federer winning in four sets. He also leads the head-to-head series, 18-16, including victories in two of their three 2014 matches. He has had the lighter road to his record 26th career Grand Slam final, having dropped only one set in six matches, while Djokovic has lost five sets and had been pushed in three matches.

'I have a lot of energy left in the tank,' Federer said.

There has been, at times, an edge to the rivalry, Federer bristling at the cockiness of Djokovic and his camp.

'Of course, I respect Roger and everything he has achieved in his career as a player,' Djokovic said. 'To come back and play finals of Wimbledon again, it's incredible what he's doing. But, again, when we come to the court, that ends.'

What, if any, impact the two coaches will have on the finish remains to be seen. Federer called Edberg 'a piece of the puzzle.' Asked about Becker after his semifinal, Djokovic said the German was 'a bit stressed' about wanting to escape to watch his country's World Cup match with France.

'He said, 'See you later,' he said. 'I said, 'O.K.' '

Tennis star Liam Hignett books spot in tournament at Wimbledon

Tennis star Liam Hignett books spot in tournament at Wimbledon

12:00pm Tuesday 5th August 2014 in Sport By Graham Merry, Sports Reporter

Oakridge tennis player Liam Hignett

OAKRIDGE tennis sensation Liam Hignett will aim to succeed where Andy Murray failed this year after booking his spot in a prestigious tournament at Wimbledon.

The 14-year-old has long been known as one to watch and claimed victory at the HSBC Road to Wimbledon South West Regional Quali-fier at the East Gloucester Club in Gloucestershire.

Hignett, a member of Totally Tennis, will now play in the HSBC Road to Wimbledon 14 and Under Challenge at the All England Club between August 11 and 16.

Murray lost in the quarter-finals at SW19 earlier this month and Sherfield School pupil Hignett admits he can't wait to grace the hallowed Wimbledon turf after experiencing his first taste of the tournament as a reserve last year.

'I can't really believe it,' he said. 'When I saw the draw I thought I had a good chance but I knew it wouldn't be easy.'

Hignett beat Joel While 4-6 6-1 6-2 in the final round to get through.

'Thankfully everything went to plan,' he added. 'I definitely did it the hard way though.

'I was getting flustered and frustrated towards the end as I made a few errors.

'I'm not sure how I will do at Wimbledon, but I did see the standard last year as I was called up as a first reserve and got to play in the consolation draw in the doubles.

'If it was anything like last year it will be absolutely fantastic. I think I've improved quite a lot since then but there's still room to do better. It's going to be a great experience.'

Fellow Totally Tennis member Miles Bromilow was also in action at the weekend, batting admirably before losing to Thomas Powell 6-2 4-6 6-2 in the first round.

And the 14-year-old is hungrier than ever to see his name in lights after falling just short of booking his spot at Wimbledon.

'It was disappointing. I had a lot of errors towards the end of the match and I thought I could win the first round,' said Bromilow, who also attends Sherfield School.

'I let a lot of points slip, but I only started playing when I was 10 and a lot of these players have been playing a lot longer, so I can take positives from that.'

The HSBC Road to Wimbledon National 14 & Under Challenge is the UK's largest national junior grass court tournament and forms part of HSBC's investment in the stars of the future.

Wimbledon champ Kvitova ousted by Rogers Cup qualifier

Maria Sharapova said she has plenty of time to sort out her game before the U.S. Open and that might explain her early departure from the Rogers Cup Canadian Open women's tennis championships.

The fourth-seeded Sharapova had a month layoff after Wimbledon and the rust was apparent in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 loss to 14th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.

'I couldn't find my rhythm,' said Sharapova, who struggled with her serve and made far too many unforced errors. She went on to say that she's honing her game with an eye on the U.S. Open, which begins in two weeks.

Rain interrupted the match twice and, while it provided Suarez Navarro with some rest, she wasn't particularly happy about the second delay after she took a 3-2 lead in the deciding set.

'I spoke to my coach and he told me to keep it simple and I was able to do that,' said Suarez Navarro, who won three games to close out the match.

Suarez Navarro's next opponent will be unseeded American Venus Wiliams, who upset sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Five of the top eight seeds failed to reach quarter-finals and, with the exception of Kerber, all of them were playing their first tournament since Wimbledon.

Second-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic lost to Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in another match that was interrupted by rain.

'I felt a little bit like being in England,' said Kvitova. '(Makarova) played well today, but it was difficult for me in my first tournament since winning Wimbledon

'My serve wasn't really there. It helped me sometimes in key points, but it wasn't there all match. My legs didn't move all that well. I didn't play that aggressively. She was the player who pushed me back.'

'It's a really good win today,' said the unseeded Makarova. 'We had so many matches against each other and every one was really tough, three sets or like 7-6, 7-6. Every time, we are fighting. It's really tough to go out there and play against her.

'She just won Wimbledon so, of course, I'm really happy to come through here. First time here in this tournament I'm in quarter-finals. It's really exciting. I really want to go tomorrow to fight again.'

Makarova's quarter-final opponent will be qualifier Coco Vandeweghe, who surprised seventh-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 7-6, 2-6, 7-5.

Vandeweghe had to go three sets against another Serbian, ninth-seeded Ana Ivanovic, Wednesday night.

'I feel like I need a nice, good sleep because last night's match didn't finish until after 1 a.m.,' said Vandeweghe. ' I didn't get to sleep until probably three in the morning because you have to take care of all the things you need to with the physios, stretching, everything like that.'

The opening quarter-final match Friday will pit top-seeded Serena Williams against 11th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

Williams, who won the Bank of the West title last week in California, outslugged 15th-seeded Lucie Safarova 6-4, 7-5 to run her career record against the Czech to 7-0.

'I think I served great,' said Williams. 'Yeah, I really needed to serve well today because she was just hitting unreturnable serves for me. So I was excited with my serve.

'Overall it was interesting. We didn't really have too many long rallies. We both were just hitting lots of service winners or aces. So it was kind of hard to get a rhythm.'

Wozniacki cruised past Shelby Rogers, the American qualifier who eliminated fifth-seeded local favourite Eugene Bouchard on Tuesday. Wozniacki needed only 51 minutes to win 6-0, 6-1. Wozniacki hasn't played a high quality opponent, but she has lost only six games over three matches.

Wozniacki is three years removed from being No. 1 in the WTA rankings, but she's only 23 and she said she's a better player than she was when she was on top.

'I think I always improve and I keep improving my game, so also I'm more mature and I make smarter decisions out there,' said Wozniacki. 'At the same time, you know, the women's tennis keeps improving as well so you need to keep stepping up. It's getting tougher. The girls are hitting harder, making less mistakes.

It's all about keep improving and keep moving forward.'

The last quarter-final matches eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus against the winner of the last match between third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland and Sabine Lisicki of Germany. Azarenka defeated British qualifier Heather Watson 6-2, 6-4.

MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon meet for just the second time since the latter club were formed in 2002.

MK have no new injury concerns, but boss Karl Robinson is expected to make changes following Saturday's 4-2 win over Gillingham.

AFC Wimbledon defender Andy Frampton (ankle) remains sidelined while on-loan centre-back Adam Barrett is ineligible.

Striker Adebayo Azeez is the only one of Neal Ardley's nine summer signings who is still awaiting his debut.

The old Wimbledon FC were renamed MK Dons in 2004, a year after re-locating 56 miles to Milton Keynes.

AFC Wimbledon won five promotions in nine seasons to reach the Football League in 2011.

The two sides played each other in the second round of the FA Cup in December 2012, with MK Dons scoring an injury-time winner to progress 2-1.

MK Dons boss Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio:

'I think the way the clubs and fans conducted themselves after the last game was how it should be once again.

'What Neal Ardley and his staff have done there has been very good.

'They made the last game here very difficult for us. It was a wonderful occasion.

'It was on TV and I thought the media hyped it up more than they had to. Now it's not on TV and we're left to our own devices to play the game.

'The league is more important than the cup for me. The game at Peterborough on Saturday is massive. It's the next game, so you want to win it, but it's not up to me to get carried away in the politics.'

AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley told BBC London 94.9:

'I am very emotionally tied in with this club. There are a lot of people it is very raw with.

'If we could put a smile on some of their faces and give them that moment, then that would mean a lot to me.

'It can't be as bad as it was 18 months ago when I first took the job. We are a better team than we were then.

'We will do as much as we can on Monday and make sure the players understand how we are going to approach the game.

'We want to keep players fit but we will pick a team that we think will win the game.'

Head-to-head

The sides have never met in the League Cup or the League with their only previous meeting the previously-mentioned FA Cup tie.

MK Dons

MK Dons have progressed in each of the three League Cup ties in which they had been pitted against a side from a lower division.

AFC Wimbledon

AFC Wimbledon have never made it further than Round One of the League Cup in their three appearances in the competition.

Stosur defeats Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard

Posted August 21, 2014 14:26:24

Samantha Stosur has found some form ahead of next week's US Open defeating Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA Connecticut Open.

Producing a powerful service game, Stosur briskly ousted the third-seeded Canadian 6-2, 6-2.

'I just had to come out and play aggressively,' Stosur said after the match.

'I tried to serve well and play the type of game I like to play.'

It was an improved performance from her narrow first-round win over Kurumi Nara of Japan, and has given the US Open 24th seed some confidence ahead of next week.

'It's great to come here and win two matches. The first one was tough but I played a lot better this time.'

Stosur next faces Belgian Kirsten Flipkens, who beat Germany's Andrea Petkovic 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (8/6).

Camila Giorgi sprang an upset to defeat four-time champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-2.

The Italian saw off the former world number one in 78 minutes to book a last-eight date with Spain's Garbine Muguruza, who eliminated Chinese qualifier Peng Shuai 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in another second-round match.

In the other quarter-finals Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova, who ousted top-seeded Simona Halep, will take on American Alison Riske, and second-seeded Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will face fellow Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Isner in good shape ahead of US Open

At the men's ATP hardcourt tournament at Winston-Salem two-time champion John Isner made it safely into the quarter-finals where American compatriot Sam Querrey toppled second-seeded Kevin Anderson in straight sets.

Querrey, seeking a third straight semi-final appearance in the US Open tune-up, downed Anderson 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 to stretch his career record over the South African to 7-4. He next faces Spanish fifth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who saved two match points in a 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) win over American Donald Young.

Isner, the top seed, defeated 13th seed Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-1, 7-6 (7/3). Isner didn't face a break point in the 68-minute match, firing 17 aces.

In the quarter-finals, Isner will face seventh-seeded Czech Lukas Rosol, who beat Spain's Pablo Andujar 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Taiwan's Lu Yen-Hsun also booked a quarter-final berth, cruising past Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-2.

He'll face Andreas Seppi of Italy, who beat France's Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 7-6 (9/7).

Belgian qualifier David Goffin extended his unbeaten run to 25 matches, beating Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to set up a clash with Jerzy Janowicz. Poland's Janowicz dispatched France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Murray Dethroned by Another Young Star

WIMBLEDON, England - It is only one tournament, but in many minds it is the biggest tournament, tennis's grandest stage. So let the speculation begin that the reign of the Big 4 in the men's game might have come to an unceremonious end during Wimbledon's second week.

On successive days on Centre Court, former champions have been dismissed by younger players who had never played this deep into a Grand Slam event. After 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios's four-set dismissal of the two-time champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round Tuesday, Grigor Dimitrov, a rising 23-year-old Bulgarian, defeated Andy Murray of Britain, the defending champion, in a stunning 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-2 quarterfinal Wednesday.

Dimitrov, formerly referred to as Baby Fed because of resemblances in his game to Roger Federer's, had beaten Murray in their previous match, in Mexico. He had also won the Aegon Championships, the pre-Wimbledon grass-court event in London.

But few expected the beating he delivered to Murray, who had won 17 straight matches at Wimbledon, including the 2012 Summer Olympics. Murray also had not dropped a set in his first four matches of this tournament.

Dimitrov, however, said he could sense that Murray's game 'was not at the highest level' as they warmed up in front of the crowd, most of it expectant - or at least hopeful - of a Murray victory.

Dimitrov also said he had been helped by several practice sessions with Murray, whom he considers a friend. The sessions helped him develop a familiarity with Murray's diverse game.

It was Dimitrov who started tentatively, missing on a couple of ground strokes that gave Murray a break point in the first game of the match. But Dimitrov held, quickly got into a rhythm and broke Murray in the fourth game on the way to cruising in a 25-minute first set.

Dimitrov's service game was bigger. His ground strokes were bolder. And he feasted on Murray's second serve, with Murray winning only 10 of 32 second-serve points for the match.

The second set established Dimitrov as the superior player and eliminated any thoughts that the stage would ultimately get the best of him. Having broken Murray for a 4-3 lead, Dimitrov had a game point for 5-3 when he suddenly played a few loose points, floating his sliced backhand, and was broken right back.

After the disappointment of wasting two more break points in the 11th game, Dimitrov took control of the tiebreaker with a backhand pass off a short Murray approach.

'My start of the match was poor, and that gave him confidence,' Murray said. 'When I got back into the second set, that was my opportunity. The momentum was switching - I couldn't do it.'

Murray added, 'He was the better player from start to finish.'

Dimitrov, the No. 11 seed, will play Novak Djokovic or Marin Cilic in the semifinals. Murray, 27, eliminated much earlier than expected in his first tournament with his new coach, Amélie Mauresmo, will move on to the hardcourt season.

England, which was hoping that Murray, a Scotsman, would ease the pain of its poor showing at the World Cup, will have to be satisfied with the memory of 2013.

At Wimbledon, White Is in Style Whether Players Like It or Not

WIMBLEDON, England - Wimbledon has long required players to wear outfits that are 'predominantly in white' or 'almost entirely in white.'

But this year, a 10-part decree was introduced in the competitors' guide stating that 'white does not include off white or cream' and allowing only 'a single trim of color no wider than one centimeter.' The almost-all-white rule now explicitly covers caps, headbands, bandannas, wristbands, shoes and even 'any undergarments that either are or can be visible during play (including due to perspiration).'

Richard Lewis, chief executive of the All England Club, said the time was right to make accessories subject to the policy used for shirts, shorts and socks.

The usually unflappable Roger Federer, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, sounded exasperated this week when asked about the rules.

'White, white, full-on white,' he said. 'I think it's very strict. My personal opinion: I think it's too strict.'

'If you look at the pictures of Edberg, Becker, there was some colors,' Federer added, referring to the Wimbledon champions Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker.

The more specific dress code, which clothing designers and players were notified of months in advance, has been strictly enforced. In the qualifying rounds, the American Rhyne Williams was told to cover the black underside of his hat brim with white tape before he could continue playing. Even Martina Navratilova, a nine-time Wimbledon champion, was told that the pale blue stripe on the skirt she was wearing for an invitational doubles match was against the rules.

Navratilova questioned how a tradition was being upheld if the type of clothing she had been allowed to wear for decades, some of which is in the Wimbledon Museum, was suddenly verboten.

'I think they've gone too far,' she said.

The crackdown comes after years of clothing manufacturers' adding more pops of color to Wimbledon ensembles in an attempt to stand out in a sea of white. In 2010, Serena Williams wore an off-white dress with red trim and bright red undershorts. She described the outfit as a tribute to Wimbledon's traditional snack, strawberries and cream.

When she won her fifth Wimbledon title, in 2012, Williams accented her white dress with a headband, wristbands and undershorts in magenta. Williams's opponent in the final, Agnieszka Radwanska, wore black undershorts; Williams's semifinal opponent, Victoria Azarenka, wore undershorts that were bright blue. Marion Bartoli won last year's women's final while wearing a beige headband.

One of the tipping points for the rule change might have come last year, when Federer wore white shoes with orange soles for his first-round match. Tournament officials told him that the color was too much and that he had to change his shoes for the next match.

Tennis whites became a phenomenon in the late 1800s to prevent the appearance of unseemly sweat stains as the sport became an increasingly popular social gathering.

'One problem which simply had to be addressed very early on was that of perspiration,' Valerie Warren wrote in 'Tennis Fashion: Over 125 Years of Costume Change.' 'As increased skill at the game led to more movement on court, this in turn led to the dreaded problem of perspiration causing the appearance of embarrassing damp patches on colored fabrics. It was quite unthinkable that a lady should be seen to perspire!'

Wearing white at Wimbledon was a matter of tradition, not stipulation, for the next six decades.

Ted Tinling, a British player who pioneered fashions in women's tennis after his retirement, made one of the first introductions of color at Wimbledon in 1947 when he sewed short trims of light blue and pink onto the hems of dresses for the British player Joy Gannon.

In his memoir 'Sixty Years in Tennis,' Tinling recalled the uproar caused by a similar dress he made for Betty Hilton the next year when she played in the Wightman Cup, a team competition held at Wimbledon. Hazel Wightman, the namesake of the event and a matriarchal figure in American tennis in that era, objected to the intrusion of color and even suggested that Hilton had lost because she was 'self-conscious about the color on her dress.'

The next day, Wightman asked the Wimbledon committee to ban the dresses, and in 1949, there were signs in the Wimbledon dressing rooms saying, 'Competitors are required to wear all-white clothing.'

Tinling would venture into color again in 1962, when he made Maria Bueno a dress with a lining described as 'shocking pink.' The next year, Wimbledon made it a condition of entry that competitors must wear clothing that was 'predominantly in white throughout,' a vaguely worded rule that was written in all capital letters and enforced unpredictably, but carried the threat of disqualification if a player failed to comply.

When the United States Open became the first international tournament to allow colored apparel, in 1972, Wimbledon did not budge.

Still, large swatches of color on shirts and dresses showed up at Wimbledon for decades, and players enjoyed seeing how far the rule could be bent.

'I had all white on, with white bloomers, but they had red ruffles,' said Chris Evert, a three-time Wimbledon champion. 'They weren't noticeable at all because our dresses were longer. But the guy, he lifted up my skirt and looked at the red and told me to go back to the changing room and change them.'

Enforcement was inconsistent. During his five Wimbledon title runs, Bjorn Borg wore a white shirt with green pinstripes and a navy collar, which became a popular seller for Fila. Designers for the company assumed that they would not need approval in 2001 when dressing its players in an identical design as part of a retrospective collection, but the All England Club rejected the design, and emergency white shirts had to be raced from Italy to England.

Martin Mulligan, a 1962 Wimbledon finalist who has worked for Fila in global tennis promotions for 41 years, said he appreciated the clarity but not the effect of the new regulations.

'Clothing manufacturers really don't like it because we all look the same, always,' he said.

Danny Lieberman, vice president of apparel for Fila, said sales of white tennis outfits tended to lag behind sales of the same designs in more vivid colors.

'All-white, generally in the United States, is not your best-selling collection,' he said. 'People here like color.'

Wimbledon photographers like color, too. In 2007, Tatiana Golovin wore an approved Lacoste outfit, a short white dress with red shorts underneath. After her first-round victory, several newspapers printed pictures with her head cropped out, focusing instead on her undershorts. The first question Golovin was asked in her news conference was, 'Can I ask you about your knickers?'

'I played so bad that year,' said Golovin, who is working as a commentator at Wimbledon this year. 'It was the last thing I wanted to get attention for.'

Pat Cash won Wimbledon in 1987 wearing a black-and-white checkered bandanna, and he has kept the accessory as he has transitioned to the seniors circuit. Cash won the senior invitational doubles event at Wimbledon the past four years, but he pulled out of this year's competition last week because of back pain and the new rules, which would have required him to buy new specialized shoes for his surgically repaired knee, as well as a new bandanna.

Cash blamed the stricter rules and enforcement on the clothing companies that tried to bend the former standards.

'They pushed it too far, and now everybody's suffering from it,' he said.

'I think white is great,' he added. 'But I think it's a little bit strict and a bit old-fashioned. Tennis in this country, and I think a lot of places around the world, was seen as a bit square, and for many years it's broken out of that. Now it has sort of gone backwards a little bit in that direction. We want the kids to pick it up and want to play tennis, not to think, 'Aw, I've got to wear white and collars and all that to play tennis?' '

But Venus Williams, who has her own clothing design company, EleVen, and often sports some of the most distinctive looks at tennis tournaments, did not bristle at the stricter rules.

'I think it's a nice change,' she said. 'I think everyone just kind of glows in white.'

Eugenie Bouchard breezes past Simona Halep and into Wimbledon final

Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, left, shakes with Romania's Simona Halep after winning their semi-final match in straight sets at Wimbledon. Photograph: Matthew Stockman/Getty Images

Eugenie Bouchard stepped into the sunlight vacated by Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova in this weird Wimbledon tournament by surviving a dramatic, fretful semi-final against the No3 seed Simona Halep on Thursday and steps up to take on the 2011 champion Petra Kvitova in Saturday's final.

The 20-year-old Canadian won 7-6, 6-1 in an hour and 20 minutes but might have sealed it a few minutes earlier but for a bizarre incident on her first match point, in the seventh game of the second set.

As Halep - wrapped up like an Egyptian mummy (left thigh beforehand, left ankle after going over at the end of the fourth game) - served to stay in the tournament at 1-5 and 15-40, a fan shouted out, distracting Bouchard, who pulled away. Halep went through with the serve and the umpire ignored the Canadian's plea to replay the point.

'It was a little crazy, I've never ended a match like that,' Bouchard said, although there did not appear to be any animosity between her and the Romanian because of it. 'I kept my focus.'

As for her first final, she said: 'I'm just going to go for it. I'm probably going to have my toughest match yet. I've put in a lot of hard work and it's been years in the making. I've had a lot of success but I always want more.

'It took a little bit of mental strength today, but I'm not going to give away my secrets. It's tough work but it's what I love. I think I can play even better than I played today. It's cool I got to stay at Wimbledon for two whole weeks.'

Halep, who came to the semis a little fresher, probably was the slight favourite but there was little between them until the second set.

When Halep turned her ankle at 2-2, and had to have it heavily strapped before resuming gingerly, she was there for the taking. But Bouchard either missed the obvious - moving her stricken opponent around the court at every opportunity - or found it tough to do against the hard, flat ground strokes of her opponent.

Either way, Halep came through the mishap because the Canadian hit too many balls into her forehand zone. By the time Halep was steady again on two feet, they were back on level terms. There was nothing in the match all the way to the end of the set.

Remarkably (or not, come to think of it), Halep was winning a higher percentage of points on her second serve than her first (61-52), but her shot selection and court management were stretching Bouchard across the baseline in nearly every exchange.

There was more drama midway through the tie-break - with Halep 3-2 up and about to serve - when a spectator collapsed and required medical attention. After she had been helped away from court, Halep saved a set point before Bouchard hit the winner on the hour.

The first proper break of the match went to Bouchard for 2-1 in the second when Halep struck her fourth double fault, and the contest shifted further her way after a regulation hold when the world No3 erred on her forehand.

When Bouchard netted a backhand to hand Halep break point, the match briefly bubbled back to life. Surely she could not blow it from here? She did not. A good serve on the backhand side was too good for Halep.

So she meets Kvitova after a tense examination against an excellent opponent with enough drama to fill a Shaftsbury Avenue playhouse.

Have your say on Wimbledon to Sutton Tramlink extension as four possible ...

Have your say on Wimbledon to Sutton Tramlink extension as four possible routes are revealed

Updated 3:27pm Tuesday 22nd July 2014 in News By Mike Murphy-Pyle, Chief Reporter

A map showing the possible routes

Four new routes a tram link between Sutton and Wimbledon could take have been revealed - and you can have your say on them.

Click here for a larger version of the map

Sutton and Merton Councils have come up with plans to extend Tramlink to connect Sutton with South Wimbledon Station.

The long-running ambition has been to have a straight link between Sutton town centre and South Wimbledon underground station going via the St Nicholas Way, Angel Hill, Rosehill, St Helier Avenue, Morden underground station and Morden Road.

But now the councils have come up with four adjusted proposals, one of which would remove a direct link to St Helier Hospital and another would take the route straight through the pedestrianised section of Sutton High Street.

Neighbours and businesses have been invited to tell the councils what they think of the proposals at a series of events coming up next month.

Councillor Colin Hall said: 'An extension to the Tramlink could provide quicker and cleaner public transport links for Sutton as well as boosting local business and creating jobs.

'This would of course be a major development and it is important that our residents have their say on the proposed extension. Their views will be shared with Transport for London before deciding the next steps.'

Merton Council cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration Councillor Andrew Judge added: 'An extension to Tramlink, connecting a significant area of the borough to the major transport hubs of Wimbledon and Sutton could provide quick, easy and clean public transport for many people.

'We want to hear from residents and businesses about what they think of the proposals. We will then ensure that residents' views are shared with TfL and taken into account in deciding on where a Tramlink extension would go.

'Our preferred route would run mainly on-road between the existing Morden Road tram stop, along Morden Hall Road, St Helier Avenue, up to Rose Hill and on to Sutton town centre.'

Sutton Council has come up with two proposals and Merton Council has done the same. Sutton's two proposals are the removal of the direct link to the hospital, which would cut journey times, costs and traffic disruption, and taking the route directly along the High Street, which would also cut costs but would affect the shopping area.

Merton's two suggestions are linking the tram route to South Wimbledon station, which would add costs, and taking the route through Nursery Road playing fields and Abbey Recreation Ground, which would be less expensive but would impact on open space.

The scheme is dependent on Sutton Council and Sutton businesses coming up with a funding programme that would attract matched funding from Transport for London. Other areas, including Crystal Palace, are also bidding for funding to extend the Tramlink, which already serves Croydon and part of Merton.

The consultation events will take place on Thursday, July 31, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm at Merton Civic Centre in London Road, on Saturday, August 2, from 10am to 1pm at the David Weir Leisure Centre in Middleton Road, Carshalton, on Wednesday, August 6, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm at Sutton Civic Centre in St Nicholas Way and on Thursday, August 7, from 10am to 1pm at Sutton Salvation Army Church and Community Centre in Benhill Avenue.

Serena rebounds from Wimbledon...

World number one Serena Williams climbed out of an early hole to beat third-seeded German Angelique Kerber to win the WTA Bank of the West Classic crown

STANFORD, USA - World number one Serena Williams climbed out of an early hole to beat third-seeded German Angelique Kerber 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 on Sunday, August 4 to win the WTA Bank of the West Classic crown.

The top-seeded American, playing her first tournament since a disappointing Wimbledon campaign in which she was slowed by a virus, got her hardcourt build-up to the US Open off to a good start and will try to carry the momentum into next week's tournament at Montreal.

Williams collected her third Stanford trophy and her fourth title of 2014, after triumphs in Brisbane, Miami and Rome.

But the 17-time Grand Slam champion has struggled in majors this year, failing to make it past the fourth round in the Australian Open, French Open or Wimbledon.

She'll have her last chance of the year to add another major title to her resume at the US Open, which starts at Flushing Meadows on August 25.

'That would definitely make (my year) better,' Williams said. 'That would be a great thing. But I'm just focused on the next tournament.'

Kerber, who saved a match point en route to her semi-final victory over Varvara Lepchenko on Saturday, soared to a 5-1 lead in the opening set.

Trailing 5-2, Williams saved two set points as she broke Kerber to trim the gap to 5-3, part of a run of five straight games that gave her a 6-5 lead.

Williams saved one set point with a screaming forehand cross-court winner before Kerber netted a forehand. The American took the game when Kerber poked a forehand wide.

Williams broke Kerber to love to knot the set at 5-5, and held serve for 6-5 with a game that included a 120 mile-per-hour ace.

'It wasn't easy,' Williams said. 'I blinked my eye and I was down 1-5. She was playing so well, I was like, 'Oh my gosh, what's going on?'

'I just thought to myself, 'Relax, don't get crazy about it. Don't think about anything but making your shots.''

Kerber saved a set point in the 12th game as she held serve to force a tiebreaker that an increasingly confident Williams dominated.

Williams broke Kerber to open the second set and led the rest of the way, although she needed four match points to finally put the match away.

'I take away a lot of confidence from this match, knowing that I can play with the best,' Kerber said. 'I felt I was trying and fighting, being aggressive on every point.

'But I know that Serena plays very good in the important moments. She starts moving better, serving better, hitting the lines. That's a very special thing that she has.'

Tough test looms in Montreal

Williams can expect to be tested next week in her title defense at Montreal, where she could face Wimbledon finalist and Canadian hope Eugenie Bouchard in the quarter-finals.

After a first-round bye, she could find herself facing Australian Samantha Stosur, who beat her in the 2011 US Open final.

Despite the injury withdrawal of Chinese superstar Li Na, the Montreal field boasts a wealth of big names including Maria Sharapova - who could meet Williams in the semi-finals -- and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

Kvitova, seeded second, won the Canadian crown in 2012. In her first tournament since her Wimbledon triumph she is joined in the bottom half of the draw by Agnieszka Radwanska, Victoria Azarenka, Jelena Jankovic and Ivanovic. - Rappler.com

Roger Federer wins the first match since losing the Wimbledon final ...

Roger Federer 06 Aug 2014 - 02:05 / by Talal Dar / reads 92.Source:

Tennis: Former World No.1 Roger Federer needed only 52 minutes to breeze past the Canadian wildcard Peter Polansky in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Federer was appearing in his first match since losing the Wimbledon final in 5 sets against Novak Djokovic last month.

2-time Rogers Cup champion, Federer has won both of the titles in Toronto, reaching the final here once and none in Montreal, so he clearly likes Toronto more.

Federer started by breaking his World No.129 opponent in the first game of the match, but Polansky broke back immediately. Federer broke him again in the 3rd and the 5th game and won the first set 6-2.

Second set was even easier for him as he handed the Canadian wildcard a bagel and moved into the third round not leaving any drops of sweat.

The Swiss is making his first appearance in Toronto since he lost the final here 4 years ago in 2010. He skipped the tournament in 2012 and 2013.

In the third round, he will face the winner of Marin Cilic and Malek Jaziri.

Kyrgios produced his career highlight by knocking Rafael Nadal out of Wimbledon earlier in the summer but he was unable to dent Murray's challenge in the Canadian capital.

Murray dominated the match with his serve, producing seven aces in the two sets to book a clash with Richard Gasquet in the next round.

It was Murray's first match since failing to defend his Wimbledon title with a last-eight exit from the All England Club last month.

The 27-year-old British number one is on a Rogers Cup quarter-final collision course with Novak Djokovic should he progress in his debut hardcourt tournament of the season.

The event offers his main preparation before the US Open begins on August 25.

The last quarter-final match will see eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus face third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, who ousted Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Azarenka defeated British qualifier Heather Watson 6-2, 6-4.

Police Hunt Oskar Pawlowichz over 'Violent' Wimbledon Burglary

Police have released the name of a suspect wanted in connection with a violent aggravated burglary in south west London which left a man with 'life-changing' injuries.

Oskar Pawlowichz, 29, is wanted in connection with the attack during a burglary at an address in Wimbledon which left the occupier Paul Kohler with serious facial injuries.

Metropolitan Police have released the name and image of Pawlowichz, a Polish national, as they hope to track him down in connection with the raid on the house on Kings Road on 11 August.

Two men have already been charged with GBH and aggravated burglary in connection with the incident. A 30-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and is currently in custody at a south London police station pending further investigation.

Det insp Dan O'Sullivan, of Merton Burglary Squad, said: 'We are calling for members of the public, in particular the Polish community, to assist us in tracing Pawlowichz's whereabouts.

'We believe that he may make an attempt to flee from the UK to Poland, and at present we are in direct liaison with the Polish authorities, UK Borders Agency and Interpol and a co-ordinated effort to detain Pawlowichz is underway.'

Pawlowichz is 6ft tall and described as of stocky build. He is bow-legged, walks with a limp and is known to have links to numerous areas in south London.

Kohler was attacked at his home after opening the door to three masked men on the evening of 11 August.

Once inside, one of the suspects violently assaulted him while two other suspects attempted to tie a 50-year-old woman who was at the address to a chair.

Kohler was taken to a south London hospital with multiple facial injuries and bruising to the body and limbs. He also underwent surgery for a fractured eye socket.

Two residents who were upstairs at the time of the incident were able to call 999. Police arrived at the address on Kings Road within minutes to arrest two of the suspected burglars.

Wimbledon burglary attack suspect 'may flee UK'

A Polish man who might 'flee from the UK' is wanted by police over a burglary in south-west London during which a man was badly beaten.

Paul Kohler, 55, suffered a fractured eye socket in the attack by masked men when he opened the door of his Kings Road home in Wimbledon on 11 August.

Police want to trace Oskar Pawlowichz, 29, and believe he may attempt to reach Poland.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

He was arrested on Garratt Lane in Wandsworth earlier.

Last week, two other men were charged with causing grievous bodily harm and aggravated burglary and both were remanded in custody by a court until later this month.

Police have described Mr Pawlowichz, who was born in Tarnow, southern Poland, as 6ft tall and of a stocky build. He is bow-legged and walks with a limp.

Det Insp Dan O'Sullivan said: 'We are calling for members of the public, in particular the Polish community, to assist us in tracing Mr Pawlowichz's whereabouts.

'We believe that he may make an attempt to flee from the UK to Poland, and at present we are in direct liaison with the Polish authorities, UK Borders Agency and Interpol and a co-ordinated effort to detain Pawlowichz is underway.'

Mr Kohler's wife, his 24-year-old daughter and her boyfriend were in the home at the time of the attack.

The academic, who is head of law at the School of Oriental and African Studies, has said he is unable to move his eye because of the socket fracture. He is due to have reconstructive surgery this week.

Serena Williams: "I'm just playing for pure me"

The 2014 U.S. Open is underway in New York City.

The top-ranked woman in tennis, veteran Serena Williams, takes the court Tuesday evening against fellow American Taylor Townsend, 14 years her junior.

With a season of highs and lows, Williams has very high hopes for this year's final grand slam, CBS News co-host Norah O'Donnell reports.

'I am feeling really good,' Williams told CBS News.

Williams is calm, cool and confident ahead of this year's grand slam. She won the last two U.S. Opens and hopes to take home the crown this year.

'It would be really amazing,' Williams said. 'It's such a tough field this year though so I don't know, but I do know that it would be an unbelievable feeling for me.'

A third win for the star is in no way a guaranteed win, considering she failed to reach even the quarterfinals in any grand slam this year.

Last month, shocked fans watched as Williams seemed to lose hand-eye coordination in a Wimbledon doubles match alongside her sister Venus. One of the best server's in the game double faulted four times, before voluntarily pulling out of the competition. She said later it was all due to a viral illness, but the tennis community seemed skeptical.

'No, it wasn't--I couldn't really, there was no real answer to that,' Williams said. 'I couldn't really find out exactly what it was, which is one thing that was a little frustrating but at the same time it was really...I was really, really, really sick.'

Williams said after some recuperation time, she quickly recovered.

'I'm much better now,' she said. 'I've been better since then. I took a lot of time off after that and I actually didn't leave the bed after about a week and a half...but I was able to recover after that.'

A string of recent victories has proven she's squarely back in fighting shape.

Williams is excited to once again be seeded number 1 at this year's open, deemed by some as the sport's greatest player.

'It's just working hard I think, and really also enjoying yourself,' Williams said. 'For me I think you have to--whether if you're playing the world's greatest tennis player or any other sport I think you have to enjoy it.'

As Serena prepares to defend her women's championship, the men's division seems to be very much up in the air with last year's winner Rafael Nadal pulling out due to a wrist injury.

' You know, I haven't spoken to him but obviously I would wish him really well and he's so competitive and he's amazing. He'll be back next year,' Williams said.

As for calling the player her fellow 'booty brother,' she said it's 'for obvious reasons. We can all figure that one out.'

At age 32, a good decade older than a lot of her competitors, Williams is still having a great time playing the game. And despite having 17 grand slam titles already under her belt, she has no plans to cede the court anytime soon.

'There's nothing that I need,' Williams said. 'Right now it's just numbers, and everyone is just like, you know, because right now I don't need to win another Grand Slam, I don't need to win another tournament. I could go home and go to bed for as long as I want. But at the end of the day, I'm just playing for pure me.'

As far as retiring goes, Williams said, 'I know myself that I probably will do that but it's not time yet. It's just not time.'
